How your pet's illness could put your mental health at risk

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/18/health/sick-pet-care-study/index.html

snip . . .

A new paper published in the journal Veterinary Record on Monday ties caregiver burden in pet owners to elevated stress and general symptoms of depression and anxiety, as well as poorer quality of life -- similar to the burdens of caring for a human loved one.

The findings are the first to show how providing daily care for a sick pet could affect a pet owner, said the paper's lead author, Mary Beth Spitznagel, associate professor of psychological sciences at Kent State University in Ohio.

"It is important that we do not minimize what family caregivers are experiencing in human caregiving relationships. I would not say that pet caregiving is the same, for example, as providing care for a parent with dementia or a spouse who has had a stroke," Spitznagel said.

"But pet caregiving in the context of a chronic or terminal disease is clearly stressful for the pet owner, and we can probably learn a lot about how to help people in this situation by looking at what helps reduce stress in human caregiving," she said.

Tips for pet caregivers at link.

I lost my best friend Beaudreaux 2 months ago. It's been tough. He was an 18 year old Himy mix who had kitty IBS his entire life and struggled with kidney disease for the last 4 years. On medication for many years. Sweetest cat ever!

& yeah no kidding!

My poor sweet girl was poisoned by a flea product last year and she died a horrific death! I cried for months!

It left me thousands of $ in debt.

If that doesn't cause you to have a nervous breakdown, I don't know what else will.

RIP my dear sweet Jules! ... your human that tried her best & failed miserably and yes, I blame my stupid self for not RESEARCHING the poison that vet RX'd!

It is called Cheristin for Cats. They had her on Comfortis before that. These poisons built up in her system over a period of several months and settled in her brain.

She was blind, shaking, was trying to run in reverse circles and could no longer walk in the end and was vomiting white foam and blood. She had also lost the ability to purr and meow. Neurotoxic paralysis will do that to a cat!

Both of my two BIG tomcats were affected too but fortunately, they did not die! No restitution for any of this either, just a lot of

STUPID ME!

Please! You are not stupid about this. We should be able to trust the vet's recommendation. I am trying to figure out what to use now so your info will help.

I am so sorry this happened. The thing is we feel for them so much and we are usually at a loss to fix things.
Peace to you CAV.

The least of them is Advantage.

If the local shelter gets a donation of any of Elanco's products, they THROW THEM IN THE GARBAGE! They know how toxic they are!

Sonzabitches!!

Elanco sucks bigtime! They pay-off vets to work for them & they are professional liars & they killed my baby Jules! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would research everything prescribed to me before putting it in my mouth since that happened. It took me a long time to recover . Reasearch anything thoroughly. Doctors listen to pharmaceutical reps lie for more sales also.
Of course for Pets too and also of course restitution is almost impossible. Yes I have heard stories about the drops and I am so sorry she was a victim of the poisons . Truly tragic.

like most dogs, are so tuned into our body language that it naturally effects them. I am very sick now and the fake prez doesn't help my condition since he is causing me so much mental and emotional anxiety (I need the ACA desperately). I have to be careful since my dog is 14 and she gets very upset and kisses me, puts her head and tail down, etc and this is not good for her health too.

is wrong with the "Richest Country in the World"?

I can understand your worry as I had no insurance for awhile and I took a crummy job w/benefits to have any.

Hang-in there & I called Washington, D.C. today to stop what they are trying to do that will HARM you. How many more must these corporate pigs kill before it is the wrong one and they have to actually DO something positive to HELP?

As for your poor dog, I am sad to read how upsetting it is. Animals know a lot more than they are given credit for and that includes feelings and senses too!

Your dog needs you so you must go on! Keep that on your mind as you walk this difficult path in life.

I called 13 more senators today...I call ALL of them over and over. My dog is my best medicine and I don't want to cause her undue stress. It is difficult these days since the fake prez is causing the healthiest and most sane and rational people to lose sleep and have new found anxiety disorders.
