We've been approved!

Bean, the beagle, will be joining the family next week, as we've been approved for adoption by the rescue organization caring for him! I'm shopping this weekend for a crate, retractable leash, collar and chew toy. He's been with the rescue group in a foster home since last August, when he was found running the fields as a stray, and I know he's attached to his foster mom and her family. So I expect there will be sadness, stress and many adjustments (on both sides) before he bonds with us. But we're all eager to start! Next Wednesday is bring Bean home day!

A huge advantage of an older dog is being housebroken. That alone makes your interactions more fun and less angst!

Bean is a looker!!!

skip the retractable leash. if you want him to have some lead to wander a little, get a long lead. a retractable is absolutely useless for training, and really leads to the wrong impression of who is in charge.

good luck.

Bought one today before reading your post, but I have the receipt and can exchange it on Monday.
I never considered the psychology of a retractable. We have one that we use on our older dog, but she is slow and very gentle----never had any power struggles with her. Bean, on the other hand, is younger, livelier, and assertive (in a cute way).
Thanks for the heads up!

well, more accurately, he makes fun of them.
your pup will be some work. that assertiveness wont be cute for long.
if you aren't already a dog whisperer fan, i highly recommend him. everything i ever learned from him worked like a charm. (except for the things that i do not apply faithfully.)

Train him well, and you can let him off leash at times. You will need a good treat bag for that. Also hugs and thanks for adopting!

But only because this is a beagle. Unless you live in a very very very very rural area and the beagle has gone through extensive training with a professional, beagles are notorious for following their noses and getting themselves lost. They put their nose to the ground, follow the scent for hours, look up and have NO idea where they are. Even if you are walking with them, they catch a scent and they can disappear in a flash. Unfortunately I speak from some experience. My sister left the door open once and it was 4 terrifying hours before we found our beagle. That was one of the worst/best days of my life...worst thinking of every bad thing that could happen to her and best when we found her safe and sound.

Best to be safe with a beagle and keep them on the leash or in a well fenced yard!

Long, long, looooong before cell phones and the Internet, this was in the mid to late 70s. We were visiting family down there. A (mild) hurricane was coming in when the beagle got to following a scent and we lost her - as you say - in a flash. Like she'd been scooped up by aliens.

This story has a happy ending. After the storm blew past she showed up in the yard again. She was muddy and bedraggled, but perfectly okay and quite happy. This was now maybe 24 hours after she'd gone. We were very happy to have her back, but also very lucky. Beagles are scent dogs and they absolutely will follow their noses.

Aside from the fact that they ruin any chance of actual training, they are extremely dangerous.

I read of an animal trainer losing the end of a thumb that got tangled momentarily...right when her large puppy bolted.

And I've had them wrapped around my ankles at the dog store, by an owner who was too busy yakking with the store clerk to notice what her dog was doing.

p.s. Congratulations on Bean! Cute doggy

He looks so cute and like a real sweetie! He'll bond just fine with your family and pretty darn quick, too. Dogs are very adaptable. Before you know it he'll have his new home staked out as his territory and bind himself to your family as if he always had been. Just give him some space and keep an eye on him as he checks out his new surroundings sniffing everything and getting adjusted. It won't take him long at all, and after a few days you'll think you've always had him as part of the family and so will he. He's already had a lot of upheaval in his life already and has adapted really well to new situations, so he'll be just fine with your family and likely almost right away.

You might want to consider giving him just a half a tablet of pepto bismal chewables until his system gets used to different water in your area (if your water system is different from the one the shelter uses). Every water system has different amounts of different chemicals, and just drinking water from a source that's different than the one the dog was accustomed to can cause stomach upset for the first week or so. The daily pepto tabs are great for the stomach problems that can result from different food and water and even any stress from being in a new environment. Most people just put up with the stomach upsets from all this sudden change for that first week or two, but it's no fun cleaning up barf or diarrhea from the carpet (they ALWAYS seem to want to be sick on carpeting!), so with the pepto tabs you likely won't have to deal with any of that and neither would the dog... a new place is disconcerting enough for a dog, but it probably is a lot worse if they feel sick to boot. You might have to disguise the tabs in food or dump them down his throat, but my dogs thought they were yummy and ate them like treats right out of my hand. I think the chewable tabs are cherry flavored or something so they don't taste yucky. I take them myself from time to time, and they're the only chewable medicine I've ever used that doesn't taste really gross... like chalky blobs of dried toothpaste or something. YUCK! I wouldn't compare them to candy, certainly, but they really aren't bad at all to chew up.

I'm so excited for your new doggie! The next few days are going to feel like they're moving at a crawl, huh?

Happy if I can help. I wish I had known a lot of stuff like this with the first dog. That was no fun at all cleaning his diarrhea accidents off the carpet in those first couple of weeks. Ick.

A half a tablet a day for a Beagle should be good. Though I got my dogs as puppies they're large breed dogs and roughly Beagle sized when I got them. Yoshi was already huge since I got him at four months of age and he's on the biggish side for a male Akita but I still just gave him half a tablet a day and he was fine though he probably should have taken a whole one.

The tablets are big so they're easy to just break in half. And I gave it to him about an hour before his chow time of the day (I split his food for the day in half and feed him twice a day... seems to have better digestion that way). I kept him on them for the first week and a half... I was told he should get them for a week or two, so I compromised and did a week and a half. It's kind of funny that at the end of that time both Yoshi and Boo before him felt cheated out of their little pink "appetizer" before their meal, and I felt like a meanie when after that week and half I didn't give them anymore.

I don't think they come in a box smaller than 30 tablets, and the dog will need only a few of them, but it's nice to have them hanging around since pepto is one of those meds that everyone could have a need for once in awhile. There were a few times I was very glad to remember I still had the rest of them long after he didn't need them anymore for my own occasional stomach complaints.

So, tomorrow is the big day you bring your new fur-kid home! I was always so excited about getting each dog I couldn't sleep a wink the day before.

Congratulations on your new family member!

I'm sure Bean will settle in just fine. But if the adjustment is difficult at first, you can always come back here w/any questions you may have. I've found that this group has a wealth of pet knowledge and practical ideas on how to deal with just about anything that may come up.

I wish you and Bean many happy years together; and thanks for choosing a rescue dog!!!

I'm actually a failed foster myself, because it's so hard to give them up.

That said, I work with a cat rescue group, and we all absolutely LOVE IT when one of our adoptors emails or sends pictures with updates on the cats. It means the world to all of us - AND it incentivizes us to keep doing what we do. Doesn't have to be anything elaborate, or even all that often. Just every once in a while to let the foster know that the pet is loved and doing well.

Just my two cents...

Thank you in advance for giving this kiddo a GREAT home!

The best thing you can do for a beagle is crate them during the day. We had a little girl and she did really well in the crate when we were away.

Have sooooo much fun!
