The Food and Drug Administration is warning pet owners that several brands of dry dog food contain too much vitamin D, which can be toxic in high amounts, increasing their risk of kidney failure.
The FDA said that dog food sourced from a single manufacturer, but sold by multiple brands, contained "excessive, potentially toxic levels of vitamin D." Recalls have been initiated for impacted food from Nutrisca, Natural Life Pet Products, Sunshine Mills, Inc., Kroger brand, and ELM dog foods.
"After receiving complaints from pet owners about dogs with vitamin D toxicity, one of the firms reported to the FDA that it was recalling dry pet food due to potentially toxic levels of vitamin D. Many other brands with a common contract manufacturer have also been recalled. The FDA is working with the contract manufacturer to provide a comprehensive list of affected brands," the FDA said in a press release.
An FDA spokeswoman said they can't disclose the name of the manufacturer because it is protected information.

(8,379 posts)by myself. Our dog Abby and then our dog Jack both got sick from commercial food. Once Abby died (she was on specialty food for the remainder of her life), I started making food for my dogs.
Now, with all the beef recalls, nothing is guaranteed, but I'm doing my best.

(652 posts)It's a manufacturing giant to have Kroger as a customer. I figure Diamond.
I'm going to make my dog's food. There is a product called BalanceIt made to add to homemade dog food to make sure the dogs get all necesessary nutrients. It was developed by the vet school at Univ of Cal. Davis, IIRC. They also have recipes online for free.

(652 posts)A nationwide recall of dry dog food has expanded to include brands distributed by a Dutch conglomerate that sold the potentially toxic products at several thousand stores across the U.S. and through online grocer Peapod. Seven other companies are also recalling dog food, bringing to at least 10 the number of affected brands.
Major retailers known to have sold the possibly tainted dog products include Food Lion, Hannaford's, Giant Food Stores, Martin's Food Markets, Stop & Shop and Peapod--all owned by Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize--as well as Kroger, which runs 2,769 grocery stores, and Germany's Lidl, which runs about 60 stores in seven states.

The Dutch company is Ahold. But they are the distributors, not the manufacturers.
