Miraculous moments practically every day since I adopted Caleb. He's getting on in years, and has had to have some masses excised, but at 11 years old now, he's still such a spry dog, so loving and helpful. He "talks" with me for a while about his day when I get home from work, and... nudge, nudge, the ears, daddy, the ears. Can't get enough with the ears!

My personal belief is that dogs are way smarter and understand way more than we give them credit for. My whippet (who passed away last year and I miss her terribly), would sometimes do things in response to conversations we were having, like she was listening to us and reacting to us and even understanding what we were saying. She was an amazing dog.

When I think of all the good things in the world that make life worth living and worth fighting for, dogs are at the very top of the list. I hope to one day be a foster home for abused dogs that need a home.

and his distaste for and detrimental comments about dogs. I would say he is lower than a snake’s belly and incapable of any feelings at all.

I look into my dog’s eyes and I can just feel the love. They make all our worries and cares long forgotten.

In bed, Sunday morning, I was 38 years old. I looked in my standard poodle Sam’s eyes and it hit me. He was not in any moral sense different from me. It was the only true religious experience I have ever had.

They communicate so much but sometimes not enough. Two nights ago my little dog and I were going back and forth when she kept staring at me, "What are you trying to say?". The responses were kisses, tail wags, more stares into MY eyes.....I knew she wasn't hungry, thirsty, didn't want to play or go out, was healthy, etc. I scooped her up and cuddled her since it was all I could think of that was left on the "happy dog check list".

Looking into her eyes I could tell I was looking at a cousin.

I know, you're asking about our more ordinary canine and feline friends, and while they can be quite smart, and clearly have a spark inside, they are NOTHING what I experienced with the chimpanzee.

They both have different times of days they want to cuddle me. For captain Morgan it is in the evening when I am watching tv. He'll get right beside me on the couch. I pet him and he purrs. Twilight likes to sit on top of me when I first get into bed. I'll try and a get her to stare into my eyes but mostly she just wants to not be directly looking into mine eyes while I pet her even though our faces are about 5 inches apart. She purrs too. If I pet her while she is on her own bed her claws will come out and she'll try to hold onto me with her claws so I stay there and pet her some more. Twilight's purr is really quiet. Captain Morgan's is more robust. Such sweet creatures. Captain will stare into my eyes until he can't contain his happiness and deep blinks, which is not long. Twilight I lent to my dad when he was a kitten so she has always been more reserved and shy. She likes it when I kiss her on the head. I just wish her purr was louder because she is sitting on my now and if i don't breath I can hear it. But otherwise not.
