So my pooch has been having a rough time and I am feeling like a failure as a dog mom. We were at the vets last week and left with the diagnosis of an inflamed anal gland. Daily antibiotics and benefiber in her water were prescribed. Things have been okay until tonight. She woke me up trembling and bright red blood literally pouring from her anus. I am terrified. The vet opens at eight. Will she be okay until then? She is everything to me. My best pal. She sticks to me like glue. I feel horrible leaving her in her little bed bleeding but I don't know what else to do. Of course, I will take her to the vet in the morning but will she make it? She's only four pounds. I love her so much and my heart is breaking. Please tell me something. I am so scared. I want to hold her and comfort her but there's so much blood it is literally dripping on the floor when I pick her up. Please help me.

3. One thing: when you call your vet, is there any emergency number?

Usually vets have an emergency clinics in large areas for out-of-hours queries.

I'm no expert, and I don't want to tell you the wrong thing. Please check for an emergency contact and, in the meantime, please search online for the symptoms. My beagle, many years ago, did something like this, and it was terrifying. It turned out it was a condition of the medication she was taken.

Again, please check on the emergency number in the nearest area to you and try to research as much as you can to see if you should little one water etc or to do nothing until the morning.

or just slowly bleeding? Is there an emergency vet clinic near you that you can call?

6. Is there yellowish discharge, too, or smelly liquid? If so, she could have a ruptured anal

gland and perhaps it could be abscessed. If so, an emergency visit to the vet's clinic might be in order. If the blood is actually "pouring" from her, I would think she needs to be seen, especially since she is so tiny.

Is she scooting her butt on the floor? That would also suggest anal gland issues.

Also, she might well be in pain, and the vet could maybe give her something for it.

8. I would certainly try and find an emergency vet.

If your vet didn't warn you that this could happen it probably means this is not a common side effect of the meds. Also, try and Google the antibiotics she is taking and check the side effects there. But I would certainly try and find an emergency vet somewhere in your area. If your vet doesn't have an ER number on his after hours message, gry Googling "Emergency Vet near me".

12. If there is no emergency vet I'd take her to the regular emergency room at a hospital.

If firemen care about saving animals all the time I am sure a doctor or nurse seeing your baby suffering would tell you something useful even if they couldn't legally help her themselves. I just know what I would do with my baby (she is 16). Maybe take her to the local fire station and see if they have any trained medical people who have some advice. Staying up all night feeling helpless would absolutely destroy me.

13. I absolutely agree on the Emergency Vet Clinic

We have one locally that's open nights, weekends and holidays. Look in the phone book if you have one or online. My heart is with you, I've been there, have taken two of my dogs there.

I called them once when my dog was choking on his ball. They told me what to do and I was able to get the ball out of his throat.

Some time in the night the bleeding stopped. The vet thinks that it could be antibiotic related. So no antibiotic today but we are scheduled for another recheck tomorrow. She's not eating or drinking so far today, but she does seem to be feeling better. Thanks so much to everyone who responded to my post. It means so much. Thank you. ❤

17. What a relief!

I didn't respond last night because I was at a loss. I could only think of "call an emergency vet" and that didn't appear to be an option. I will suggest getting some Pedialyte, though (double check with your vet though). Like you, I have little dogs, most at the 5lb mark. They can easily dehydrate, as I am sure you know, but Pedialyte can help. A little goes a long way.

Us little dog owners have to stick together, what is a "boo-boo" in a large dog, can turn to serious trauma in a small dog...quickly.

I am glad she is doing a bit better. I hope she recovers quickly and you can get, what I am sure is needed, a restful nap/sleep.
