I'm going to lose my dog.

Last week I found out that my dog has a mass in his intestine.

He was scheduled for surgery with my vet yesterday, but he spiked a fever under anesthesia, so she reversed it.

We ended up at a specialty clinic where he is in surgery now.

The surgeon just called me to give me the bad news. The tumor seems to have already destroyed his pancreas and it is in a really bad spot. I gave her permission to remove the tumor, remove the pancreas, and reroute some GI plumbing so he can still live.

But he will immediately become diabetic, and his prognosis is poor.

I'm devastated.

It's about a dog who goes blind, and his owner is in despair about it. But with his owner's help, Digger is perfectly happy going for walks. I can't remember the exact wording but the gist of the story has always stuck with me--dogs don't know that it's sad that they're going blind. They adjust and adapt; that's the way dogs are.

It's like dogs that have to have a leg removed because of cancer; they have no idea that it's sad, they just go "okay, this is different, so I'll figure out how to run and play with what I've got."

I'm so sorry about the shock of the diagnosis. Dogs are absolutely extraordinary beings who deserve to only ever have good things happen to them. But he won't be sad; he'll love you just as much as ever and he'll love being loved by you just as much as ever.

It had to be removed because there was a tumor behind it. She did run into things now and then, but as my vet said "you'd be surprised how much they rely on their noses".

I can't wait to see him. Due to the virus, no human patients are allowed in. I hope he survives till I can pick him up.

did end up going blind. She was able to get around OK though, even when my family moved houses. I have Creon if you need any (pancreas), it can be expensive.

Years ago, I had a beloved beagle, who had all sorts of maladies. I took her to the closest vet school (which was 200 miles) away and left her there for a 6 week treatment schedule.

It was unbelievable what they did for her. Most of the independent vets had given up on her, but a vet school has the resources and vet students and top vets who are their professors.

It's probably not cheap, but it's worth considering if that's feasible. My baby lived another 5 years thanks to our local vet school.

Otherwise I would have had his surgery done there. It was my first choice.

Pancreas..didnt eat for 17 days doctor did an ultrasound liver was destroyed 4th doctor was on deaths door. The doctor showed me how to force feeder but she thought it was useless but after another 17 days she started eating on her own.
She is a diabetic going blind but is surviving and happy.....she was a older rescue dog in kennels for 2 yrs.....so my prayers to you anything is possible

4 more years! She got shots and if she had a seizure we gave her corn syrup. Very manageable.

For the pancreas put her on some Creon. It is what people take for it and it works well.

My little dog turned 17 on Sat and I am still in shock. None our family's dogs lived past 16. I hope your baby recovers and makes it to the next birthday and the one after that.

In December my 5 year old Standard Poodle, farm dog extraordinaire and my best buddy got sick. Went to the vet, had a tight abdomen and they aspirated blood. Off to Kansas State that night with a promise of a full xray series in the morning and surgery if they found a suspected tumor on his spleen. They found that tumor and 4 others on his liver. 5 years old, my best pal, my bubby and horse barn helper. We drove in that night and put him to sleep, there was nothing else to do. From best buddy running around the barn one day to gone in 2 days. I am so very sorry for you and your sweet dog. It sucks so badly and hurts so much.

I am holding you all in my heart. It is something none of us wants to have happen but we all do and there is a certain sorrow for everyone we know when they have to go through it. Cry hard and often and get that out. Once it subsides enough if you are so lonely go rescue someone else. It will help you and if there is anything after this life your dog who misses you too will be happy for you and proud he meant so much you needed to do that. So many hugs to you.

My middle child's bearded collie has a tumor on the liver. We were able to have it removed and the dog is doing well.

Diabetes can be managed. You have extended your time together with the surgery.

Dogs can make amazing comebacks. I had an off the track Greyhound that was diagnosed with bone cancer in his hip. The vets at OSU gave him 2 months if we didn't amputate his leg. I said no--this guy lives to run and play, even if he can't do it so well now. He made it another two years.

Try to keep your attitude positive, especially around your pupster. He will know if you are sad and already mourning him. Keep healing and loving thoughts in your mind.

61. So sorry about this. I had to make a similar decision earlier this year

Had a cat since 2000. Suddenly, she got much thinner, then she stopped eating on the day I was supposed to take her to the vet to see what was going on.

She had kidney failure. Had the same option of expensive care that would extend her life, but the vet said it would mean the rest of her life was painful and she'd still die within a couple of months.

I decided to spare her the pain, and let her go. I couldn't have her suffer, simply because it would hurt me to say goodbye so soon. Hardest thing I ever did. I was there with her until the end. She never took her eyes off me, until she was gone. My darling Annie...

About a month later, I was still so depressed about her death that my husband said, let's get another cat. You need a furry friend to heal your heart. So we went to the same shelter where we'd gotten Annie and found a beautiful new girl to bring home. My husband was right. My new kitty doesn't replace Annie in my heart, but she does get me to focus on the present and the future. She's soft and sweet-natured and can be cuddly. Not as cuddly as Annie was, but, then, Annie wasn't all that lovey at first, either.

Not a day goes by that I don't think of Annie, but I'm at peace with her passing now.
