BTW, I call her that because she is so afraid of people.
She is confident enough to come to me without bribing her with food. Food is always important as she is under nourished but now I'm on par with food. She lets me pet her and shows signs that she may be close to following me home. I need to prepare a place for her in the fenced back yard or perhaps in the garage.
She has fleas--no surprise--but the infestation is severe enough to surprising and concerning. I keep Capstar on hand for emergencies for my small dogs (2-25 pounds) and gave her two of them this afternoon when I got back from the Woman's march.
Her neck where the chain or collar was is not in bad shape. Hair worn off and skin exposed but no injuries to the skin.
I can't afford to feed her Jack's home made diet but at this point Styrofoam with artificial flavoring would make her happy so I'll invest in some Major brand food.
Shit, I didn't plan on another dog and damn sure not a big one--hate to pick up after her--but it's looking more like an adoption all the time . . .

(57,073 posts)Sorry to hear about her flea problem, but really glD she is beginning to trust you & that the skin on her neck is not injured!
Ty again, so much, for helping her! I'm sure she will be very grareful to you for whatever help you are able to provide.
There are free or very low cost spay/neuter clinics in about every area.

(14,559 posts)and the city government sponsors a food bank every week and has low cost pet care (mostly vaccinations) 4 times a year. Next clinic is December 2 and I hope to have her there.

(14,559 posts)Can't afford to feed another dog.
Don't want to clean up all the mess in my little back yard.
Big dogs are not supposed to be in the house.
Complicates traveling and being gone over night.
l realllllly don't need another dog.
Then I named her . . .
Shit.
Stick a fork in your thigh.
You're done. Lol
I never wanted a Pittie, either, but life brought me one...
Me.

(22,057 posts)One site I would recommend checking, if you do decide to adopt her out, is RescueMe.org
We adopted a couple of our Great Pyrenees from there.
AndyS
(14,559 posts)It's also a good site and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, only a toe and two fingers . . .

(2,786 posts)she's yours... you'll never be able to let her fully go. Look around. Besides the pet spaying clinics, there are likely to be clinics to help you out with food, especially with the pandemic going on. Even at 65, our critters get fed before we do!
I live in a very small town. During the food bank days, they help not only with people food, but with 50 pound bags of dog food, too (thank god/ess). It may not be Purina One, but any port in the storm these days, I say.
I adopted Lexie from a shelter. No one wanted her. She'd been an adoptive fail 3 times in 3 months. I know why. She's a pony who only THINKS she's a puppy. On the first day out trying to teach her to walk on a leash, 10 feet from the house, a motorized bike went by. Might as well have been a squirrel. She took off, I went flying into the air, and five hours later, I was back home from the ER on crutches. (I'm 4'9, 91 lbs)
Yes, I, who had already adopted 10 cats (3 are now over 21) now have this enormous 2-year old puppy who can still knock me over with her tail. But I love her and she loves me and she will NOT be an adoption fail THIS time, I swear.
It will just take time, AndyS, to get everything sorted out. But remember, when it's meant to be, all things work towards the good. And I've discovered when the gods lay these babies in our path, they do so with a reason. Sometimes we're still seeing so thru darkened cloth, but eventually it becomes clear and we thank them. Meanwhile, just think of all that unconditional love you'll be getting! (gryn)

(14,559 posts)I really would like to find her a forever home somewhere else but to do that she has a serious make-over in the process.
Nobody is going to want her the way she is; unaltered, needing shots, needing de-worming, needing vaxes, etc.
It's gonna be a bucket of money no matter what.

(4,168 posts)She was starving, bedraggled and desperate. We can't take him in for good -- we already have six rescued cats -- but there's no way anyone would adopt her in her present condition.
So we've committed to getting her to the vet, spayed, and recovered. By then she should be plumped up and clean (she's looking better after just one week) and hopefully photogenic enough to charm someone into providing a forever home.
