Related: About this forumOMG! More developments on Snowflake! I can't believe it's moving this fast!
What a difference a day makes! This PM I went back with Jack to check on Snow. She came out as soon as I called and wasn't jealous of the food. Ate a bit and then came up to me and put her head on my chest! Just stood there and shared affection! There was gentle tail wagging all the time. She and Jack exchanged sniffs; butts, genitals and breath and no offence was taken by either!
She let me check her teeth; a little plaque but nothing a beef rib bone won't fix, gums pink and not inflamed or infected, no tenderness (yes, she let me massage her gums!). Rolled over and let me look at her belly. Mammaries are shrinking from the first time I saw her. She hasn't been perpetually pregnant and I'm guessing 5-6 years old. Has double dew claws on her back feet and nails need trimming. Some loss of muscle tissue and her coat is dry and stiff. Signs of malnutrition.
At the end I encouraged her to follow me (and Jack) and she made it about 20 feet before she chickened out and lay down in the middle of the street--not running away but not willing to leave 'home'. I walked her back to the fence and will return tomorrow AM to lather rinse and repeat.
I've completed the floor and frame of her shelter. Went scavenging the neighborhood (lots of construction right now) and have enough material to complete her 'home' with first class hardy board exterior siding! Hell, might put a fireplace in .
If it all goes well tomorrow she may be sleeping on a new fluffy bed at a new house in a new backyard behind a chain link fence.
We'll see. It's all on her schedule. I feel encouraged by the affection she showed this afternoon.

(2,783 posts)I'm wiping tears from my eyes. I'm so happy for you. If I were near you, you'd have no worries and I'd have a good, new dog. Whoever leaves pets behind like this need to be flogged and worse, IMNSHO. Blessings on you, AndyS. You are truly one of God's angels on earth.

(14,559 posts)The house is in the midst of a rehab. It has become an on-again off-again project. Prior the these owners there was a death in the house which is a story in itself.
Snowflake moved in a few months back. I speculate that she was abandoned when her family moved - probably and eviction - and had been tied in lieu of having a fence. I can't speculate on the puppies but it seems like they are far enough in the past to have her belly almost completely recover.
The project now is to rehab the dog and make her healthy.
