Related: About this forumToday we got a sympathy card from our vet
It was really very nice. A handwritten paragraph expressing sympathy at the loss of Tigger earlier this week.
As a side note, we had, just a few days before she died, bought some prescription food to try on her for her thyroid issues. We only bought three cans to start. A total of $5.09 with tax. We returned that yesterday, but they had already credited us for the amount, even before we brought it back.
We've always trusted this vet. Now we think even more highly of her.

(18,219 posts)I find it very touching---the doctor never sent one when my father or mother died.
I had one time when my kitty who had so many problems and was finally out of the woods and doing well had to have a tooth that was broken removed. They removed the tooth, and he was doing fine. In recovery, he went into cardiac arrest and died. When I went to get the body and settle the bill, they told me there was no bill. Now, I knew that they had done all the work so I was surprised that I had to pay for none of it. Shit happens.
But I will continue to go to this vet---more than just treatment. They have compassion for us fur parents.
RIP Tigger.

(11,065 posts)I still have the cards with the handwritten notes. The doc that wrote and sent the card for my first dog that was the first fur-patient I brought there used up every tiny bit of white space on the card for the "note" (it was much more of a letter than a note). I'm not sure why I keep them because they make me cry if I read them.

(32,031 posts)but when we lost Theo (our big English Lab) last year we got a surprise. One of the vet techs had started making paw prints in clay (shaped in a red heart) and sent them out as a memory to anyone who had lost a pet. It has been hanging here in my kitchen now for a year and a half. He was a senior dog that we adopted from rescue and only lived 8 months, but we made sure he had fantastic care and to date he is the best dog I've had.
I know Vet bills can seem crazy sometimes (to me as well) but I've done some research and while they make a good living it is actually much less than other doctors on average. I think many really do go into the field because they love animals.

(2,124 posts)is very common with Vets. I've received a card from my Vet and her staff after all 6 of my kitties passed. When Sammy passed in February, the Vet sent one personally from her and I also received one from the staff. It is a decent and empathetic gesture and I really appreciated it in the days following their loss.

It always makes me cry again though
I am so sorry about Tigger, I have thought of you often since I read your sad story.
Edited out the unnecessary stuff.
