We are almost finished with the anti-biotic treatment preceding heartworm preventive. I'll start heartworm preventive Dec first. She's doing just great and tolerating the Doxycycline well--no adverse effects at all.
Her appointment to be spayed is Jan 27. Hopefully she won't come into heat before then but if any of you have a chastity belt I'd appreciate a loan just in case . Jack, who is nutered, will be my early warning system--he's nutered, not dead.
She is a fine and gentle dog. While the neighbor's dogs bark like crazy almost 24/7 (OMG! That big blue truck is stealing the trash!!!) she lies quietly in the driveway just watching. Sometimes in the wee small hours she will alert on a stray cat or racoon passing through the yard. A simple low pitched 'woof, woofwoof' and then silence 'cause the culprit has gotten the message.
Continuing to socialize her so she will fit in quickly with a forever home once we find one--all the rescue orgs are backlogged. She's not afraid of the car anymore and will greet me by sticking her head in the open door and licking Jack across my lap and front seat. Kinda cozy in a 2 seat sports car . . . still not crazy about going for a ride tho.
She's much more vocal than at first making moaning low pitched grumbles and growls anytime she sees me or Jack. I'm working on making her comfortable coming into the house for short periods. Started with treats which got her to the threshold, moved to the leash-and-drag method (not recommended) and then the starve and feed which broke the ice. Now she's comfortable with coming and going at will.
I let her have the run of the cul-de-sac which is working out okay. She's house broken to my property but uses the vacant lot across the street and public land nearby. She has gotten into someone's trash but doesn't tear the bag open and spreading stuff around instead bringing the bag home and doing that in the privacy of her own yard, yea for me!
Everything is going very well and she really is a great dog. She'll make a fine family pet as long as nobody expects her to be playful -- "Ya' want that ball? Why the hell'd ya throw it away? Go get it yourself." On the other hand she's quiet, docile and very affectionate in a quiet sort of way.

(16 posts)Thanks Andy. Have you thought about setting up some way we can get some financial help to you? I would be more than happy to send funds or food. Recent pix of her would be nice.

(14,559 posts)In fact I'll be buying a new Ford Maverick as soon as they start shipping the hybrid! If I can afford that I can surely afford a big ole' affable white dog.
That said, there's no family like DU family! Thanks for offering.
