She's BACK!

Maybee is playing frisbee, running and jumping…good as new. X-rays confirmed no shoulder fracture. The vet says she can do whatever she wants to do as long as she’s not painful.

Can’t put a price on youth and excellent anti-inflammatory meds. I’m so relieved and happy to be back in action with my sidekick again. Thank you all who wished her well after she got hurt.

Good news! And look at all that new snow, she should be just fine by now. All she needed was to keep calm and enjoy some cbd and whatever else. She has a good home.

We were supposed to get a half inch and got at least six inches. I’m DONE with snow! Mabes doesn’t care one bit….so here we are. Keeping her “quiet” was no small feat.

And we got about six inches, still snowing though. But the wind is here so it will all be drifts in the Dakotas by Thursday.

Trying to keep a dog of that nature calm is certainly a feat! Did the cbd help with that? I'm always curious about its effects on different subjects.

It was a liquid that she did NOT want to take but I squirted it into a pill pocket and she agreed to eat that. I would say it took an hour or two to really see the effects but that seems similar to what it takes for a human too. I take it for sleep and it’s about an hour or a little more to feel it take effect. I so appreciated the suggestion of the cbd…when she was hurt, I kinda went into a non-thinking zone and definitely needed the reminder.

We spent time doing puzzles…

There’s nothing worse than losing a pet…dog, cat etc. it doesn’t matter. Maybee is only 14 months old…I was so afraid she was hurt worse than she was.

Medial care and vet care is so expensive.

and I hate to be a party pooper here, but you might want to be mindful of activities that lead to her jumping into the air, like going after high frisbees and balls that bounce high in the air. Our girl German Shepherd (may she rest in peace!) love, love, loved chasing and jumping for her Kong ball, but one day she came down hard and ended up with a spinal injury. If memory serves, it was called spinal stenosis. She needed surgery and had to go to Great Falls to a vet who specialized in spinal stenosis. Cost us several thousand dollars and months of recovery for her.

Before her injury, I had no idea that playing ball could lead to a serious injury. I mean, you see pups on TV doing all kinds of acrobatics in the air during Frisbee competitions and agility. But Dr. Schaumburg in Missoula and the specialist in Great Falls said it was pretty common.

Anyway, just felt the need to share what we learned the hard way! Here's wishing your lucky pup (lucky because she has you for her human!) many long and healthy years ahead!

What is lumbosacral stenosis?
Lumbosacral stenosis is a neurological condition where nerves at the base of the spine are compressed by a bulging disc or other tissues. The lumbosacral disc is the last disc in the lower back between the seventh lumbar vertebra and the sacrum. Ageing may result in dehydration and degeneration of this disc which may then bulge (protrude) and compress or ‘trap’ regional nerves. The resultant narrowing of the canal in the spine (the vertebral canal) or the exit holes between the bones (the vertebral foramen) is referred to as stenosis. The underlying cause of the disc degeneration and bulging is unclear, although in some dogs it is associated with instability of the bones of the spine.

Large breeds of dogs are more commonly affected with lumbosacral stenosis than smaller breeds, and German Shepherd Dogs and Border Collies appear to be particularly prone to the condition. It is an uncommon complaint in cats.

I am watching Maybee closely. She’s happiest when she’s flying/jumping…but I’m not throwing her frisbee as high as she might like. We are taking it slowly. I’ve had border collies my whole life and this one is the most airborne dog I’ve ever had. We have to dial it back more than she would like…we have puzzles and other activities that make her brain work.

Glad, Maybee, recovered swiftly. It looks like she's making up for any time playing lost when she was recuperating. You can't keep a good border collie, down. She looks happy.

to keep a young pupper like her from being too active. My dad had a Border Collie Lab mix named Spud many years ago. That dog was way smarter than many people and had an over abundance of energy.

Happy and healing vibes to you and Maybee.
