Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumSome interesting offerings for "great guns for hog hunting"
In this issue of Petersen's Hunting, 10 firearms are noted for their hog-hunting capabilities. By way of BG, there are some 5,000,000 feral hogs roaming the States, with 40% making Texas their home. The array of guns is and has been astonishing. Texas Parks and Wildlife usually specifies "any legal means" for taking hogs, including in most areas .22 rim fires. This suggests an air of quiet desperation.
There are a few bolt-actions, a lever-action, and the rest are semi-autos, including the AR platforms, ranging in caliber up to .308. One claims to have a match-grade barrel, and another looks like a home appliance. The oft-heard question "who needs assault weapons [sic] to hunt with?" is answered, at least in part.

(11,417 posts)out this weekend to buy that gun and go shoot some wild pigs.
I used to live were there were quite a few wild pigs. We liked to see the sows with their piglets.
I'm sure some gunner can tell me why it is important to shoot the pigs.
I mean if you got a gun don't you just got to shoot something?
What comes to mind are all the country road side signs shot to hell with buckshot. Also the times in Vietnam when some fool I spent all night with on guard duty takes out an ox pulling a popasan's cart because he didn't get to shoot anything the night before.
On edit: why do we have a gun group on this board? I mean why not just go to some gun site where everyone has the same fetish?

Drop the "yee-HAH!" stereotypes and find out what's going on in the woods, and the problems with hog over-population.
If you wish to censor or ban "gun groups," then take it up with the administrators. That way you will have 2 groups:
1) The "activist" my-way-or-highway group; and
2) G.D.

(18,318 posts)But I'm not surprised, your life in the wild not withstanding. Biology & ecological protection are no longer strong suits within the halls of many righteous "progressives." But sentiment is still overly-abundant.
How are the cats?

(11,417 posts)create a need for guns. Whether it is a gun to shoot pigs or to shot bad guys on the street.
Gunners are a minority. Most people do not think that they need to protect themselves from something by having a gun handy.
I am convinced that to some extend fear is the motive for owning guns. I don't know to what extent but when I see people running out to buy more guns at the mention of gun control that irrational motivation is also there when it comes to owning guns in the first place.

(2,282 posts)because all the guns are sold out. Walk into any gun store...the shelves are practically bare. And as long as the antigunners keep saying how they want to ban all guns, the politicians keep bringing out legislation to restrict gun ownership, and DHS keeps buying BILLIONS of rounds of ammo this the skyrocketing demand for firearms of all types will continue.

(11,417 posts)Why is it that if new gun laws won't work why does even the mention of gun regulation cause people to rush out and buy more guns?
Which is it?
derp derp
1. the new gun laws will not acheive the results of making society safer or reducing crime overall
2. new gun restrictions will likely limit what people can buy in the future, so people are rushing to get them now
See that isn't so hard. Two separate concepts. Write one down if you can't keep both in your head at the same time.

(363 posts)New gun laws "not working" means they will have no effect. Specifically an AWB ban on cosmetic issues. The all sales background checks and mag size are passable.
People are always reactionary - look how popular the 94 AWB made the AR style

(17,493 posts)Feral hogs are pests that do a amazing amount of damage to the environment and to farms. They are not native to our nation. They are also not sweet critters.
Wild Hog
The wild pig (Sus scrofa), also called the wild hog, wild boar or feral pig, is not a Florida native and may have been introduced by Spanish explorer Hernando DeSoto as early as 1539.
They occur in all of Florida's 67 counties within a wide variety of habitats, but prefer oak-cabbage palm hammocks, freshwater marshes and sloughs and pine flatwoods. Wild pigs can reach weights of more than 150 pounds and be 5-6 feet long. They usually travel in small family groups or alone.
Wild pigs are omnivorous (eating all kinds of foods, both plants and animals) and feed by rooting with their broad snouts. They may cause disturbance of the soil and ground cover vegetation and leave the area looking like a plowed field.

Hunting
Wild pigs are legally defined as wildlife and are the second-most popular, large animal hunted in Florida (second only to the white-tailed deer).
On private property with landowner permission, wild pigs may be trapped and hunted year round using any legal to own rifle, shotgun, crossbow, bow or pistol. There is no size or bag limit, and you may harvest either sex. Also, no hunting license is required. A gun and light at night permit is not required to take wild hogs with a gun and light on private lands with landowner permission.

The World's Most Dangerous Game to Hunt
***snip***
Wild Boar (Sus scrofa)
Experienced hunters say that wild boar can be even more dangerous to hunt than a bear. Equipped with thick, razor-sharp tusks, and a razor-sharp mind (hogs are the 4th most intelligent animal in the world) a wild boar can weigh a staggering 660 lbs and exhibit extremely aggressive and unpredictable behaviour.
Hunters be warned! After wounding a boar, give the animal plenty of time before you follow it in to the bush. Otherwise, youll go from being the hunter to the hunted. Boars will circle a human adversary, charge rampantly and attack from behind.
A survival tip: Pick your tree ahead of time so you can climb out of harms way if ever youre being chased.

(17,493 posts)I've known several hunters that ended up in a tree after leaving their rifle or shotgun on the ground.
A wise hunter carries a .357 or .44 magnum revolver just in case.

(3,813 posts)go .223 sounds about right, .22 mmm unless your using mags I would not
want to use it. .308 is a pretty big unless your shooting at 500+ yds.

(1,922 posts)We use 30-06 and .458 Weatherby, depending on where we are. 9MM for close work.
Those bastards are tough and fast.

(2,038 posts)Even if you were legally allowed it would hardly be worth the expense. I found a Gen 1 MSAR at a local shop and they were asking $2900, more than 3 times the original price and that was before the current buying run.

I grew up in Iowa and never heard of wild hogs terrorizing crops. And I definitely don't hear of that in the mountain West.

(17,502 posts)We do have feral horses, which is probably the only protected invasive species. I'm cool with that, I loved watching them when I was a kid and check out the herds when I go home.
AFAIK, it seems to be a southern thing, maybe Hawaii and California too. Right now Florida has a campaign to eradicate the state of invasive flora and fauna, including hogs and coyotes.
