Never mind those Ferris Bueller and Star Wars-themed Super Bowl ads. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has shot a Super Bowl ad, too, and he thinks it is pretty funny, though with a serious message.
The half-minute ad features Mr. Bloomberg and Bostons mayor, Thomas M. Menino, ribbing each other as they cheer for their respective teams and cities. But then they turn to the purpose of their spot, declaring that one thing they agree on is the need for stricter federal gun control laws.
The two mayors are longtime allies on gun control and founders of a group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which has pushed for a stronger federal background check system.
Mr. Bloomberg and Mr. Menino shot the ad in New York early Tuesday. And, just as big Super Bowl advertisers like Honda and Volkswagen have been promoting their ads with previews on YouTube, Mr. Bloomberg publicized his at an appearance later Tuesday morning.

(135,425 posts)He was a RINO--he didn't want to hack through a crowded Democratic field (you do realize he was a Democrat before he did a convenience-switch to Republican, and he's orginally from Massachusetts, too) in order to get on the mayoral ballot.
A couple of years ago, he dropped the GOP affiliation and switched to Independent.
He's far too liberal for Romney--he just gave Planned Parenthood a quarter million bucks.

(7,099 posts)are an enormous waste of money. People are drinking and eating and mingling and if the commercial doesn't look funny I can't see many even paying attention. It just isn't the atmosphere to try to drive home points about political issues.

(16,038 posts)about ads not working..the poster said one, very specific type of ad, might not be effective..you are the one who conflated that very specific statement into the poster stating Super Bowl ads don't work, which is a product of your own imagination.
baldguy
(36,649 posts)Either Super Bowl ads work, or they don't. Either they're a waste of money, or they aren't. They can't be one and not the other depending solely on what your own politically biased view of the ad is.
Again, if commercials during the Super Bowl didn't work, nobody would buy them. And obviously they do get bought, year after year.

(768 posts)The Super Bowl is a prime example of an event typically regarded as an "escape". Issues ads could well be greeted with resentment by some. The rest, as you point out, could likely just tune out.

(6,185 posts)Anybody else curious as to who is paying the $1 million plus for this 30 second exercise in ego?
Anybody actually think this will result in new legislation beyond the perrenial and pointless McCarthy or Lautenburg bills?
Or that millions of Football fans will actually jump up, slap their foreheads and suddenly throw their firearms out and that it will drive a sea change in the American POV on private gun ownership?
My guess is it will be either generally ignored or ... may actually have a second life as one of the "Worst Superbowl Commercials" featured after the game? Another challenge will be telling this TV spot from the one with the Chimpanzees in suits.
But I think it's cute when the gun control enthusiasts get all excited because they finally found somebody else to actually do something while they all sit around doing nothing but jawing online. This will give them weeks of celebration. No real change but like gun control in general they'll "feel good".
Were they all such big Bloomie fans when he was bulldozing OWS last month? By Tuesday Brady and Bloomie will be touting it as a major blow for "common sense".
Or is this another "situational ethics" issue, like the Bush/Cheney "Terrah Watch list", where it's pure, unconstitutional evil when he did it, but as soon as they want to use it against gun purchasers it's a great idea?
In other news ... the NRA membership is expected to reach or exceed 4.5 Million dues paying members by the April Annual meeting in St. Louis.

(54,770 posts)Takes real guts to go against the NRA, right wingers, the "gun culture," gun dealers, gun traffickers, manufacturers designing weapons to appeal to people's fears and baser instincts, etc.
Heck, maybe gun promoters/lovers will counter with an ad showing those Arizona yahoos shooting up President Obama's likeness on a typical day out playing with their assault weapons.
For too long too many have said, we can't take on the gun lobby and win. I think it's time for this to be a national issue again. I'm glad over 600 American mayors from coast to coast have joined together to say, this has become beyond ridiculous and there's something we can do about it. The misguided anger you see on display from the gun lobby just shows how out of touch they are with the actual interests of most people. I think if you simply polled "do you want policymakers to take new steps to address the flow of guns to criminals," you would see a very high response.
