Maryland gun laws would not have stopped Navy yard shooter

Maryland's gun laws are widely considered tougher than those of neighboring Virginia, but they would not have stopped the Navy Yard shooter from buying a shotgun and walking out of a store with it the same day.

Authorities said Aaron Alexis' Monday shooting spree that killed 12 in Washington began with a 12-gauge, 870 Remington pump-action shotgun. He had purchased it two days before from a Virginia gun shop.

If Alexis — who police said had brushes with the law and showed signs of mental illness — had visited a Maryland gun store instead, he would have been able to walk out with the same gun.

Most of Maryland's strict laws about background checks, waiting periods and purchase limits apply only to regulated firearms, which in most cases means handguns and assault rifles, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said.

But they still crow hard about "background checks" (he passed) and so called assault rifle bans (he used a common hunting shotgun, like the one Joe said was "all anyone would need&quot .

It is amazing how the gun control advocates, continue to call for laws that would not have affected most mass shootings, had they been in effect at the time the shooting occurred.

I never understood that, after VA tech, they crowed hard about "gun show loopholes" but Cho did not get his gun at a gun show.. They moaned about universal background checks, but Cho, passed the background check..

I could go on and on, but I don't need too...

A massive attack of remorse or cops/security officers with guns?

My understanding is he did not take his own life.

But you're welcome to join the group demanding that the 870 pump shotgun be added to the banned gun list now.

and disarmed "good guys with guns" (armed security). I guess if everyone of those 12 people had their own guns, he would have been dead before anyone was killed? Right? MORE guns is the solution, right? Hint? Ever think people don't WANT to have their own guns???????

Also, only 7% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by an attacker with a gun, that means the absence of a gun has no element of safety for 93% of SA victims.

Duh? As a WOMAN, I find you comment about guns and rapists OFFENSE. You are just advocating women must be armed. That is a a crock. Have you ever been stalked? I HAVE. You are STILL talking to the wrong person. I am alive, never was attacked, and didn't have a gun to defend myself. Stop promoting FEAR. That is what your guns are all about. FEAR.

I think it meant to say "assault weapon". Assault rifles are by definition automatic weapons and subject to the NFA.
Nit picky granted, but a pet peeve.
Of course UK's strict gun laws prevented some nut from machine gunning a kindergarten teacher on her way home from a birthday party. Oh wait,
