Cuomo would use $15.2M to fight gun violence

The state would end its successful Operation Impact crime-fighting initiative and replace it with a program to fight gun violence upstate, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today.

Started in 2004 under Gov. George Pataki, Operation Impact had been hailed as focusing the resources of police agencies toward areas of crime upstate, leading to a 14 percent decline in crime in those regions.

But Cuomo is proposing the $15 million a year for the program be shifted to a gun-violence program, called GIVE -- Gun-Involved Violence Elimination. He said Operation Impact has largely led to a reduction in property crime.

"Through GIVE, local law enforcement will adopt proven strategies to prevent gun violence, ensuring that New York remains the safest large state in the nation," according to the budget presentation.

1. Whatever "proven strategies" might be, a proven-effective program ends.

3. Notice it was geared towards crime and criminals, instead of legal owners like the "safe act"

Wonder how you go from a program focused on gun violence to a program focused on punishing legal firearm citizens.
