Detroit citizens no longer rely on police as self-defense killings skyrocket

The people of Detroit are taking no prisoners.

Justifiable homicide in the city shot up 79 percent in 2011 from the previous year, as citizens in the long-suffering city armed themselves and took matters into their own hands. The local rate of self-defense killings now stands 2,200 percent above the national average. Residents, unable to rely on a dwindling police force to keep them safe, are fighting back against the criminal scourge on their own. And they’re offering no apologies...

...Average police response time for priority calls in the city, according to the latest data available, is 24 minutes. In comparable cities across the country, it is well under 10 minutes.

1. They don't seem to have much of a choice.

The police obviously can't handle it, for whatever reason--budget cuts, excessive volume, or just not giving a shit. I'm glad at least to see people are able to defend themselves. If it were Chicago or New York City, they wouldn't be allowed to.

2. The larger question IMO

is, how can this be? Self defense weapons only kill the family and neighbors of those who are afraid of their own shadows..Anyone who thinks they need a self defense weapon is simply paranoid in the extreme..A self defense weapon has a 99.9% probability of killing the owner when taken from them by the intruder.. This HAS to be right wing propaganda!!1!!11
