Family wants death certificate changed for man who shot self during demonstration on gun safety

INDEPENDENCE TWP. - The Oakland County Medical Examiner who ruled the death of an Independence Township man who shot himself a suicide has not been contacted by the family to change the classification.

James Jewell shot himself in the head while demonstrating gun safety in February. The man’s girlfriend was performing CPR on the victim when deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the residence on Pinedale, off Sashabaw Road, south of Maybee Road. The girlfriend, who also lived there, told deputies the victim had been drinking during the day and that he had showed her how to use his three handguns, demonstrating how safe they were when they were empty. While talking, he placed the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, officials said. The handgun fired and he was killed.

Chief Medical Examiner L.J. Dragovic has not received any communication from the family, he said.

The Detroit Free Press reported the family plans to ask for a review of the case to have the death classified as an accident rather than a suicide. The family did not return calls for comment Monday.

You decide for yourself, but I side with the family in this case.

but not accidental either, he put the gun to his head and he deliberately pulled the trigger. I do not know how I would classify it other than stupid while drunk.

However, it could be that no life insurance policy exists and that the family is motivated by a non-financial motive.

I don't recommend point firearms at anyone that's not a direct threat.

Safety first....accidents later. LOL

Exactly when was the "demonstration on gun safety" alleged to have been offered?

Except in rare cases like the Remington 700 "safety" issue I've stopped using accidental.

With very, very few exceptions negligent discharge is a more accurate term than accidental discharge.
