The Smoking Gun: A running tally of shooting deaths in Cuyahoga County

Gun violence that ranges from suicides to accidental deaths and homicides is a problem that touches friends, loved ones and neighbors as well as gang members and criminals.

It's a problem that stretches from suburban denizens to those who live in the inner city. It's a problem that challenges law enforcement, since most gun crimes aren't committed by people legally entitled to own guns but rather by people who acquired them illegally.

Yet it's not gun ownership that's at fault. It's the failure to be clear-eyed in how we look at the issue. It's the failure to enact laws that promote transparency and accountability and give law enforcement the tools needed to crack down on illegal gun ownership.

We know Congress has passed laws that make it virtually impossible for news agencies and the public to trace how criminals access the firearms they use to commit felonies. We know Ohio lawmakers have enacted bills that erode home rule, preventing communities like Cleveland and Oberlin from enacting laws viewed as necessary to protect public safety.

I would like to know how many gang and drug related. Seems like meth is a major issue up there.

Since October, police across Ohio have found 315 labs

Medina County authorities seized eight meth labs in a Medina home earlier this month. Officers said a 1-year-old baby and a 13-year-old girl were living in the home at the time. (Photo provided by Medina County Drug Task Force)

Authorities are on target to seize more labs than it did in 2009, when investigators dismantled 348, and in 2010, when they grabbed 359. In 2011, officers seized 375.

Last year, investigators reported finding 881, a 45 percent jump over the 607 taken apart the year before. Summit County, which has been the epicenter of meth making in the state for more than a decade with its underground base of cookers, leads with 66.

I hope they catch and prosecute to the full extent of the law the people who committed the homicides.

Any comment from you on your Google cut and paste of the day. I am glad this is listed as your favorite group. Much more lively than the two posters allowed in bansalot, would you say?
