‘Our gun laws are so crazy, even crazy people know that they’re crazy’

Bill Maher and his Real Time panel ripped Democrats again on Friday for not setting themselves apart from Republicans when it comes to gun safety laws, pointing out that even Fort Hood shooter Ivan Lopez questioned how easy it was for a person with mental health issues to have access to firearms months before attacking the base.

“Our gun laws are so crazy, even crazy people know that they’re crazy,” Maher said.

Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon agreed, mentioning the bipartisan gun bill that could not make it into law despite overwhelming public support following the 2012 mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

“They were trying to close a loophole reflecting mental health,” Avlon said. “It is so nuts that we aren’t able to get through a law with 90 percent support? That shows how paralyzed we are.”

But hey what does it matter you don't care about this story.

How do you identify those people that can't buy guns?

After the universal background check system is in place, we can work on fine tuning the database.

that will work great.

Would this have stopped the Fort Hood shooter in question?

NO , as he went through a background check.

We need to "fine tune" the database now to affect existing background checks.

This is how the gun lobby stalls any progress on reasonable gun regulations.

with a flawed database that allows people with mental problems access to firearms. I think we should do both. I still would like to know if I am at the range and loan a rifle to a buddy for the day, do I need to perform a background check or not?

the question is, is the loss of privacy worth the gain? At what point to we blow off the fourth, fifth, and the right to privacy for "public safety"? It reminds me of the debate about warrant-less searches when Canada was developing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. LE officials complained that getting a warrant and respecting rights would make it too hard to fight crime.
Besides, the shrink said he was "good to go". It isn't like psychology and psychiatry are hard sciences.
