"Since 1989 when 28 people were killed with a mini 14 rifle (military style semi auto with extended magazine) Canada has had some pretty strict regulations on guns and the people who buy them. To begin, there are no semi auto guns allowed in civilian hands, long guns or pistols. You must have a license to buy, undergo background check including interviews with friends, significant others past and present and local law enforcement. The conservatives were set to roll a lot of that back until the shootings at the Tomb of the Unknown and Parliament reminded lawmakers of why they have such rules to start with. Besides when the gun is pointed at YOU the perspective changes."
I'm not sure where this information comes from, since the OP didn't post a link, but...
Heres a ruger mini 14:
Goes to show what their mindset is when they use the term "military style" IMO.

(15,396 posts)I found on a facebook post several years back.
Traded the 229 for a 220 this year from a facebook BST group.
I wouldn't mind having another mini because I did keep around 20 thirty round magazines for it. (not OEM rugers but they do function)
Hopefully someday our Northern neighbors can regain some of their liberties. Until then we need to fight to keep this from happening to us.

(3,813 posts)I have a M & P 5.56 and I really like it, but the mini is a nice solid
gun, used it when I worked in DOC.

(68,644 posts)Even a little 22 with a little magazine, a plinker, would be illegal to own even with background check and license?
That makes me sick.

(7,720 posts)centerfire, semi-auto rifles in Canada. It is a restricted firearm, there are many hoops to jumped through, additional background checkszare needed, but to say they are illegal is not true. Semi-auto rimfire rifles and carbines are not restricted.

(17,502 posts)some are restricted, some are non restricted. Of course the classifications seem to change. The Ruger ARs are restricted, but the Mini-14 pictured is non restricted. What I find interesting is that SBSs are non restricted.
