(68,644 posts)Made background checks universal for all gun and ammunition purchases
Limited the ability of the mentally ill to purchase guns
Outlawed more than 100 additional assault weapons, including the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle that Adam Lanza used in the Sandy Hook shooting
Banned large capacity magazines holding more than 10 rounds
Whats your take? Would you support similar policies in your state? Take our poll and sound off in the comments below.
I can hang with the first one but not with any of the others.

During business hours, you have to schlep to a State Police barracks, fill out a form, pay $35 bucks, and wait for your new, second state-issued ID.
Why can't it just be your drivers license? Retailers simply scan your license. If you're prohibited, the sale doesn't go through.
This is the fucking Information Age. Why can't this be done?

Of course, my only point was that only one of the four provisions in the poll was barely tolerable.

(2,708 posts)It's a junk science poll; both NPR & Ileus should be ashamed of themselves for touting this as anything but junk science. It's not randomly selected, it's internet based where anyone can vote as many times as he likes by logging onto another computer, &/or creating or using a different sceen name.
Many gunnut websites send out 'alerts' linking subscribing gunnuts to the 'poll' so they can vote & thus stack the deck, while guncontrol advocates do not bother since they know it's a meaningless junk science poll.
95% to 4% and gunnuts give this any credibility whatsoever? If you think this is representative of current thoughts on more restrictive gun laws in america YOU ARE NUTS.
ileus: Just say no to a regressive 2Aers....
A regressive 2nd Aer is scalia & the kangaroo court which ruled for the individual rkba.
OK, any gunnuts turn your eyes away, you don't even wanna see what a bona fide poll looks like, you'll go apoplectic when you see your 2nd amendment mythology explode in your faces:
Quinnipiac. June 24-30, 2014. N=1,446 registered voters nationwide. MOE 2.6.
Do you support or oppose stricter gun control laws in the United States?
.................Support ...Oppose ...Unsure
6/24-30/14 ...50.......... 47 .........3
9/23-29/13 ... 54 ..........41 .........5
CBS News/New York Times Poll. Feb. 19-23, 2014. N=1,644 adults nationwide. MOE 3.
"In general, do you think laws covering the sale of guns should be made more strict, less strict, or kept as they are now?"
6/13 & earlier: "In general, do you think gun control laws should be made more strict, less strict, or kept as they are now?"
........... More strict... Less strict... Kept as they are
2/19-23/14 ....54 ...........9 ...................36
12/4-8/13 .... 49 ...........12 ................36
5/31-6/4/13 .. 51 ..........11 ..................36
4/24-28/13 .. 54 ...........10..................33

(2,708 posts)nycskip: Good news, progress for progressive gun rights supporters! More support gun rights!
It's one reputable poll, with a margin of error, it could be high it could be low, it could be outside the confidence level (~5% chance) & thus an outlier. I don't dismiss it of course but it needs be corroborated by another reputable poll to belay doubts (I've said this before). If you put your money on just one horse, you're gonna lose the exacta.
So go ahead have your pyrrhic victory party, gun ownership rates have declined since early 1990's (which is corroborated by pew, general social survey (GSS), as well as gallup to some extent).
NYC_SKP
(68,644 posts)Can't be blamed for that.
More likely to be valid are responses to questions which, if reported to authorities, would not result in profiling and registration.
No, I'm not paranoid, just observant.
In any event, the majority among us seem to support the second amendment in generally increasing numbers.
And the rate of deaths due to firearms is persistently falling.
Pyrrhic? Hardly.

(23,946 posts)care for logic or facts.
Notice how these folks are allies of the NRA, Scalia, Lapierre, Ted Nugent is their friend, and their enemies are progressive allies, they are enemies of Bloomberg and Sandy Hook parents. Not to mention facts, statistics and anything intruding upon their narrow second amendment tunnel vision view of the world.
These are not folks I would call "progressives". Progressives are not anti-fact, are not anti-gun control.
Just to give you a flavor of the prevalent lack of logic, read it and weep:

Are you applying the term "progressive" to Mike "Stop-and-Frisk" Bloomberg? That's rich, that is. He's a dyed-in-the-wool 1%er.
Faith in the benevolence of billionaires is touching in its naiveté -- kind of like how some in the Peasant's Revolt thought that once the King heard their grievances, he would step in to stop their oppression.

You forgot the fourth type, the type that understand using 300 year old wording that ignores the
"in a well regulated militia" to arm citizens who have no reason to be armed or to be in any type of milita is intellectual dishonesty equal to delusional thought. Militias in a democracy are anti-democratic.

(18,216 posts)In a similar fashion to religious and political LGBT bashers who are trying to deny their own desires with hateful zealotry, I believe some on the control side are acting in parallel.
It would explain the constant penis fixation, the stated belief that female gun owners literally pleasure themselves with guns, the belief a gun can fire itself without human intervention and that guns can influence people to act against their nature.
It also could make true the statement guns are evil since if a gun has a soul and intelligence then it may be good or evil.
It has softened my attitude towards these poor souls from contempt to pity.
