Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumAnyone here familiar with pistol permits in NY?
Specifically in Upstate. Here's the situation... I'm looking to get a new job at a nuke plant as a guard. And I'll need a pistol permit to do so. I grabbed the application for my pistol permit and have my references. It seems pretty straightforward except where it wants me to check a box for the following:
1-carry concealed
2-possess on premises
3-possess/carry during employment
I'm assuming if I want it just for the job, I choose 3. But what if I'd like to get my carry concealed? If I check that box and it gets denied, do I not get a permit at all? And if I choose option 3 do I have to go through this process again someday if I do want to pursue the option of concealed carry?
And I don't have the job yet. I have yet to apply, though I've gotten assurances it's very likely, I have a clean record & am a vet. They ask why it's required, so do I just write down its for future employment?
Needless to say, just getting the permit is what's important. And I'm ok with just that. There's a bunch of Qs and I'd be thankful for any advice. I'll prolly head to the county clerks office to ask them the same questions but I'm outta town currently so I thought I'd ask here.
Thanks in advance.

(1,695 posts)Looks like I'd better just stick to getting the on premises/carry during employment. It looks like I won't be able to fufill the requirements for "cause" to get my concealed carry. I'm still unsure if me listing the reason for premises/carry during employment as "nuke plant job" is gonna cut it if I don't already have the job. Which puts me in a weird catch 22. Can't get the job without a permit, not sure if they'll allow me a permit just because.
But as I stated above, I've got a clean record. Feels like they're making it as irritating as possible to discourage people from obtaining one.

(1,355 posts)You need the job. Do not take a chance on getting turned down for a job requirement by attempting to get your concealed carry at the same time. After you are licensed for work, go back and apply for personal carry.

(6,622 posts)... and with less hassle. Get that, and then apply for your full carry. I think you can do it with an "amendment," not a whole new application.

(75 posts)I am the store manager of a gun shop, what county are you applying in. Every county is different. If you are in Wayne county I can help you out.

(1,695 posts)I think I'm about set. I ended up finding a retired sheriffs deputy. He said to check "concealed carry" and put down the following for reason why: seeking armed security employment, hunting, target shooting.
He said he doubts I'll get the CC but the judge will issue "premises/carry during employment." So now I got my safety class tomorrow and a few papers to get notarized along with finger prints. The process is kinda a pain, but worth it for the job. Thanks for the offer, though.
All the hoops y'all have to jump through to obtain a firearm, glad I live in AZ were we don't have to have a license to just even purchase a firearm, much less carry one.

(1,695 posts)-$20 for the application
-4 references (notarized) I'll pay that cause I don't want my friends to. $40
-release of family court records for mental health, notarized. $10
-reference from my boss, notarized. Which is s weird conversation...$10
-applications, 2 off them filled out, notarized. $10
-safety class, understandable. $40
-finger prints. $94.50
-2 months average wait till approval. $5 fee once issued.
And I believe I gotta renew it regularly.
It's a chore.
