FBI official: 'Perfect storm' imperiling gun background checks

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — The surge of criminal background checks required of new gun purchasers has been so unrelenting in recent months that the FBI had been forced to temporarily halt the processing of thousands of appeals from prospective buyers whose firearm purchase attempts have been denied.

Since October, the bureau’s entire cadre of appeal examiners— about 70 analysts — was redeployed here to help keep pace with waves of incoming background investigations that continued through December when a record 3.3 million firearm sales were processed.

The transfer of examiners, which had left a backlog of 7,100 appeals, is only part of a makeshift reorganization that FBI Assistant Director Stephen Morris said has become necessary to handle a burgeoning workload that expands in the wake of every mass shooting and call for increased gun control that invariably prompt firearms sales binges across the country.

Some will consider 7,100 unattended-to appeals to be a victory but that's merely a backlog and the larger point is the fact over 3 million purchases have been processed since October.

In perspective, that means the number of firearms owned by people over the nations entire history of the nation has increased ~1% in a mere 4 months.

The people do not want to be disarmed.

2. Can't speak for anyone else, but ...

... I normally do 1 or 2 CCW classes a month, averaging 8 or 9 people per class.

For February I already have 3 large classes booked. 1 class with 20 people that all work at 2 local Apple stores, so I'll need an assistant to help out at the range and for the hands on segments. Based on their applications 9 of the 20 have never fired a gun in their lives. (More of those "non-existent" new gun owners.)

Never thought of "tech weenies" as all that interested in concealed carry or guns in general. It ought to be fun, but getting them to turn off their phones will probably be the biggest challenge.

...of your new students are first time gun owners, and if the 3,000,000 sales since October are around the same percentage of first time owners, that's like 1,300,000 new gun owners. Even if the percentage is half that, that's a shitload of people in 3 months. That people are voting with their wallets speaks louder than damn near anything.

4. A shrinking group of old, male, white gun owners is an article of faith with our control friends

It's the only thing they can cling to for support in their belief that; "In 2 or 3 generations guns wont be acceptable in society as the base shrinks".

If gun owners are actually growing, their whole world view goes to shit.

3.3 million NICS checks were done in December alone leading up to Obama's announcement on executive actions. That was 500,000 more than in 2012. It was the highest month of sales ever recorded
