De Blasio credits less guns for more stabbings

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - New York mayor Bill de Blasio is trying to put a positive spin on a recent rash of stabbings and slashings across the city. He credits the NYPD taking guns off of the street.

"I'm not a criminologist but I can safely say that guns are being taken off the street in an unprecedented way. Some people, unfortunately, are turning to a different weapon," de Blasio says.

New Yorkers have been on edge because of a series of highly-reported attacks, including several seemingly random attacks on the subways. The city was averaging more than 10 stabbing attacks a day in the first six weeks of the year.

The mayor claims that since there are so many fewer guns on the street, officers can now focus on criminals using knives and razors.

I've always said that was the main reason for gun control. They want a larger victim pool for criminals to pick from.

... I was legally OK to carry in New York City, and as my children were growing up, we would spend a lot of time there, mostly just walking around. At first my wife and I would be pushing baby joggers all over Manhattan, later, when the kids got older, we walked all over the place, taking the subway, going to museums, Central Park, all over the place.

Then I made a career change, part of that change involved a loss of a legal right to carry in the city.

We stopped going to the city.

Then we moved away from the area completely.

I'll never go back.

What's the efficacy of a knife vs a gun? how did that witty go, never bring a knife to a gum fight? (gum, or ??) what dat mean nucuni?

Don't see NYC here, but St Louis pro gun, Louisiana pro gun, Detroit shall issue: St. Louis' homicide rate in 2014 was higher than any other big city in the U.S... statistics from the FBI, which show St. Louis .. to become the murder capital of the country. The 159 murders recorded in St. Louis in 2013 give us a rate of 50 homicides per 100,000 residents — which is higher than Detroit's 44 per 100,000 residents.. Coming in third place appears to be New Orleans, with a rate of 38 murders per 100,000 residents.

Oct 2015, Big Cities With The Highest Murder Rates (gun control emboldened)
St. Louis, Missouri 49.91 Detroit, Michigan 43.52 New Orleans, Louisiana 38.75
Baltimore, Maryland 33.84 Newark, New Jersey 33.32 Buffalo, New York 23.22
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 22.43 Memphis, Tennessee 21.38 Atlanta, Georgia 20.47

Cincinati, Ohio 20.16 http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2015/10/22/violent-crime-statistics-for-every-city-in-america/

Didn't see NYC above, not here either in 2016 scout's 100 most dangerous cities:
http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/neighborhoods/crime-rates/top100dangerous/

Houston {pro gun}, the largest city in Texas, was one of the only major cities in the United States to witness a dramatic rise in murder events in 2014. That year, Houston recorded 239 murders, a 12% increase above the previous year’s value of 214, according to statistics released by the city’s police department on December 30, 2014.
Indiana’s capital, Indianapolis {pro gun}, is another among the very few U.S. cities to see a real increase in murders in 2014... 138 individuals were murdered in the city in 2014, which was an 8% increase from the figure given in 2013, and a 26% increase over what was recorded a decade ago. The increase propels the city’s murder rate to the third-highest rate on record, and for the second year surpassed that of Chicago, Illinois.
http://www.worldatlas.com/articles/murder-capital-of-the-us-states-with-the-most-murders.html

Oh wait! here's one! I found some info on New York City murder rates!:

For all of 2014, New York City reported 333 homicides — the lowest number since the modern era of police record keeping began in the early 1960s. Criminal justice experts are predicting the city will record about 350 homicides by year’s end, an increase of just over 5%. The city remains at a historically low level for killings as other major U.S. cities see large increases,

It was an announcement New York City officials had doubtlessly been eager to share with the public—major crime in 2015 was at the lowest point since statistics have been kept. nyc-officials-tout-new-low-in-crime-but-homicide-rape-robbery-rose-1451959203

Violent Crime Rate comparison, wiki, NYC & L.A. are gun control cities, others pro gun:
city .............pop....V-crime..Murd..rape.. robb... AggrA.. PropCrime
NYC .....8,473,938 ...596.7 ...3.9 ...25.8 ..195.7 .....371.3 ...1,601.9
Dallas ..1,272,396 ...664.7 ...9.1.... 61.4 ..303.1 .....291.1 ..3,589.2
Houston.2,219,933.. 991.4... 10.9.. 36.6 ..458.8 .....485.1 ..4,693.7
Memphis 654,922...1,740.5... 21.4...76.5 ..501.6 ..1,141.1 ..5,988.0
St. Louis 318,574...1,678.7... 49.9...87.6 ..490.3 ..1,050.9 ..6,252.6

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate_(2014)

So I cherry picked; wow, compare St Louis with 50 murders/100k in 2014 with NYC with 4.0? NO COMPARISON.
... how can you think NYC is crime ridden due it's gun policy, when it outshines large PRO GUN cities almost always? Geez, even los angeles puts the pro gun crowd to shame in this one.

From one of your sources:

Of America’s three biggest cities, Chicago had the highest violent crime rate at 884.26 violent crimes per capita. New York City had a rate of 596.7 and Los Angeles had a rate of 490.71.

How come Chicago doesn't have the lowest of the three? It is the strictest "gun control city" of the three.

Unbebeevable. Uh, newsflash to beevul, Chicago allows handguns & shall issue concealed carry, while California is 'may issue', and New York City disallows concealed carry in the city.
Your question is lame anyway, just trying to be a pain in the ----.

From the past:

....all rates, 2012...pop ..... violcr... murder... property
Gun control cities
Los Angeles 3,855,122 .....481 ....7.8 ......2,269 (+~14%vcr,2014)
Baltimore 625,474 .........1,405 ......35 ..... 4,660
New York 8,289,415 .........639 ...... 5.1 ....1,722 (still champ >500k population)
Chicago 2,708,382 ..........N/A .....18.3 .... 4,152 (handguns ok 2011)

Pro gun cities:
Tenn Memphis 657,436 ....1,750 ....20.2 ....6,312
Dallas 1,241,549 ..................675 .....12.4 ...4,373
Houston 2,177,273 ...............992 .....10.0 ...4,945
Kansas City 464,073 ...........1,263 ......22 ....5,525
Nashville 620,886 ..............1,216 .....10.0.....4,195
St. Louis 318,667 ..............1,776 ......35 .....6,902 (siccw 2005)
Detroit 707,096 .................2,122 ......54 ....5,792 (siccw 2002, leans gun)
New Orleans 362,874............815 .......53 .....3,772
Oklahoma City 595,607 ........919 ......14.3 .... 5,941.8
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate_(2012)

All the above pro gun cities have higher violent crime rates, murder rates, & property crime rates than los angeles in 2012, most probably in 2013 & 2014 as well. Los Angeles comes in second best after nyc, both with 'lots of gun control'.

New York and california are may issue ccw, while illinois is now shall issue. You can get a ccw permit in chicago if you are legal, but you must demonstrate need in los angeles & I don't think you can get one in NYC, or must demonstrate need.

Explain why you think chicago has the strictest gun control policies of the 3 gun control major cities. I need to update my x-files for my book 'GNs say the nuttiest things'.

I don't think anyone really believes your malarky, that chicago has more stringent gun control compared with L.A. and New York City. You are living in denial, living in the past. LA & NYC have stricter gun control laws than chicago does.

Oct27, 2015 LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to require gun owners to store their firearms in locked containers or install trigger locks when not using them.. handguns will need to be disabled and kept on the owner's person or within close enough proximity that it is in the owner's control. A violation will be a misdemeanor.
In July, city council members voted to outlaw possession of high-capacity magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
The legislation will give {domestic abuse law} police authority to seize that person’s legally owned weapons for 21 days without prior knowledge
http://abc7.com/news/la-city-council-passes-tougher-gun-storage-laws/1053843/

Calif, may be similar to Illinois: No Concealed Firearms in Schools.. bans gun owners from carrying concealed handguns at K-12 schools and colleges. It is already illegal to possess a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school or on a college campus without permission from administrators, but it exempts those with concealed carry permits. http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2015/12/29/new-tough-california-gun-laws-to-take-effect-in-2016/

Chicago, 2013: The state of Illinois does not have an assault weapons ban, nor do any of the states closest to Chicago: Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.. No mag size limit in Illinois.
But: Cook County and the city of Chicago have separately banned the possession of assault weapons, as have several Chicago suburbs, prior preemption deadline of July 20, 2013.
Chicago formerly prohibited sale of firearms within city limits, Jan 2014, federal judge ruled unconstitutional.
Sep 2013, Chicago City Council repealed the law requiring the registration of firearms and the law requiring a city issued firearm owners permit.
They also changed the law to allow the carrying of firearms on the grounds of one's property outside as well as inside the home

California law states that one may receive a permit to carry concealed if the person is "of good moral character" and good cause exists to issue the permit. in areas surrounding SF and Los Angeles "good cause" is very difficult to prove. Caifornia does *not* honor permits from any other state. http://metroseeker.com/los-angeles/gun-laws

oct 2014, NY: {wiki} Magazine size limited to 10 rounds .. rifles and shotguns, along with handguns, in New York City are required to have a permit to purchase, to be registered, and owners must be licensed and have a permit to carry.
... The changes included the expansion of background checks before someone buys a gun, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as imposed registration of assault weapons that are grandfathered in.
NYC - must apply for rifle/shotgun permit from the NYC police, must register purchase

http://www.newsmax.com/FastFeatures/new-york-gun-laws-state/2014/10/20/id/601850/

peaceful journey laws: Some law enforcement agencies (notably the NY State Police) do not recognize {FOPA} and may detain or arrest non-residents transporting firearms through New York in accordance with FOPA. Individuals in such situations would then have to use FOPA as an affirmative defense to firearms-related charges in court... NY City is the only place a pistol license is restricted from Carrying and must have an uninterrupted trip through the city with the gun and ammo locked up separately when traveling through NY City.
California courts have ruled that large capacity magazines (LCM) that are disassembled or LCM parts are legal to possess. Otherwise federal {FOPA} rules are observed.
Non-Illinois residents are granted a limited exception to lawfully carry a concealed firearm within a vehicle if they are eligible to carry a firearm in public under the laws of their own state.

Calif: llegal to possess, import, or purchase assault weapons and .50 BMG rifles, unless such weapons were acquired by the owner prior to June 1, 1989.
calif: Jan 2000, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, buys, or receives any large-capacity magazine is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment".

Handgun registration? Illinois: No; New York: Yes; Calif: Yes

One area Illinois bests NY in gun control, is a child access prevention law {CAP}, safe storage law, NY does not have one. California has a CAP law which is more stringent than Illinois.
Illinois: Imposing Criminal Liability Only if a Child Uses or Carries the Firearm
California: Criminal Liability for Allowing a Child to Gain Access to the Firearm, Regardless of Whether the Child Uses the Firearm or Causes Injury
California: States Imposing Criminal Liability for Negligent Storage of Unloaded Firearms
