Homeowner uses gun but not door for home defense

In the video, a homeowner used a gun to drive out 4 home invaders. But look at the 3 small pieces of wood from the door. The door was solid enough to keep out the elements, critters and the honest but didn't stand a chance against an average young male in good condition.

Home defense isn't just about having a gun. Home defense is a layered defense.

I personally have spent much more on exterior lighting, surveillance cameras and reinforcing doors then on my gun. Heck, even my master bedroom door is reinforced. My gun is my last layer of defense. Only to be used when the other layers fail to deter.

3. How so?

I use dusk to dawn lights along with the street lights so the area around the house is well lit on all sides.

The exterior lighting is not to give me info but make it easier for neighbors to potentially see someone and that may deter a potential intruder. It is one layer in a layered defense plan.

We feel security lights help crooks see what's going on and helps them avoid detection. No one on our street has ever had a break-in. But I googled this, and I see there are differing opinions on the efficacy of security lights. One strategy is to employ motion-activated lights.

Thus it very likely would be less effective at deterrence for an isolated home.

My neighbor to my north has full view of the east, north and south sides of my home and property. My neighbor to the south has view of the east, south and the south-west side of my home and property. The neighbor to the south-west of me has view of the south and west sides of my home and property.

Do you lock your doors at night? If so, why? Paranoia?

It's a fact that most doors don't offer much protection against home invasions such as seen in the video . It's not paranoia to acknowledge that and then take steps to rectify that.

not having a 3 inch steel, blast proof door set in a hardened steel frame is just asking to have your house broken into.

But, based upon some of the comments in this forum, I would guess than if the door was like that and the bad guy broke his leg (and the homeowner had a gun), the complaint would be "doorers" have no respect for human limbs.
