Just another Saturday night in Chicago
From the NBC affiliate in Chicago:
Nine people were shot overnight, including four who were gunned down in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, the Tribune reported.
Police told the Trib that shooting may be related to another, which killed a 6-year-old girl last month. Two gangs are fighting with each other in that neighborhood.

Will Congressman Bobby Rush be wearing his hoodie again on the floor of the House? Afterall, it accomplished so much last time he did.

(1,164 posts)Last month, as referenced in the article in the OP, a six year old girl was killed in Chicago, where the esteemed Congressman represents. What did he do when a young person from the city he represents dies versus the bullshit he pulled with his hoodie nonsense, which solved nothing.

(27,709 posts)...for speaking up about a shooting that is questionable at best?
You think Bobby Rush isn't outraged by gang violence in Chicago? Do you think the media would cover him fairly if he did try to attract attention to gang violence in Chicago? Do you realize that Bobby Rush's son was shot to death in 1999? Do you think he doesn't care?
You know who you're echoing almost to a T:
U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) weighed in on the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin Wednesday, and said he hopes those outraged about the unarmed black teenager's death will pay attention to "black on black" crime happening in Chicago as well.
Walsh made the comments after his colleague Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) was thrown off the House floor for wearing a hoodie and sunglasses to protest Martin's death.
Walsh, a member of the Tea Party who is far to the right of his Democratic colleague, agreed that the Martin case was "tragic," but told NBC everyone needs to "take a breath" and wait for an investigation into the Florida slaying to be completed.
"Congressman Rush was trying to make a point, and that's fine," Walsh said. "It's tragic, a young life was lost ... but let's not persecute George Zimmerman yet until we know the facts."

(1,164 posts)did exactly what to reduce the gun violence in his district?
Hint: Not a fucking thing.
ellisonz
(27,709 posts)better gun control.
What do you propose Congressman Rush do to stop what is now a decades long cycle of gang violence?
Until your side of this argument comes to its sense and realizes what it's doing isn't helping, you should probably refrain from regurgitating T-bag talking points.
CHICAGO | Thu Dec 15, 2011 7:38pm EST
(Reuters) - Prosecutors in Chicago on Thursday said they charged fifteen men with gun trafficking as part of a crackdown on illegal gun sales to gangs.
According to the indictments and criminal complaints, the men were allegedly part of a ring that purchased handguns, shotguns and assault rifles outside of Illinois and transported them to Chicago.
The defendants then allegedly sold the weapons for between $250 and $1600 each on the city's west and south sides to buyers they believed were gang members but who were in fact undercover police officers.

(1,164 posts)in the country. The statement below, pretty much sums up the problem. Basically, there is not a gun problem, it is a criminal problem.

(1,164 posts)are responsible for the Chicago problem? If Chicago's citizens choose to have a system of laws that are obviously either unenforceable or that their elected leader choose not to enforce, that is their perogative. Afterall, they are the ones who choose their representatives.

(17,502 posts)but they rarely fired. I have not seen them anywhere other than gathering dust on store shelves. RGs were not that cheap back then. I'm old enough to remember. You think these guys went to a flea market and found a bunch of them? I doubt it.

(27,709 posts)I think a lot depends on the quality of the weapon and the original price paid.
gejohnston
(17,502 posts)so this guy is doing ten years for $100? Maybe they did go to the GW Bush Business School. I hope they are all that stupid and they all get busted.

(1,164 posts)They are brought in and bought and sold by people who are breaking the law. If you are proposing electric fences and checkpoints, they might work, but there is that little matter of the constitutionality of those methods. Chicago has a history on the implementation of unconstitutional laws that didn't turn out so well as far as the city cofers were concerned.
Maybe, the politicians really don't want to do anything meaningful to combat crime in Chicago.
Gangs and Politicians in Chicago: An Unholy Alliance
LAWBREAKERS, LAWMAKERS: In some parts of Chicago, violent street gangs and pols quietly trade money and favors for mutual gain. The thugs flourish, the elected officials thriveand you lose.
I think this paragraph sums it up:
Most alarming, both law enforcement and gang sources say, is that some politicians ignore the gangs criminal activities. Some go so far as to protect gangs from the police, tipping them off to impending raids or to surveillance activitiesin effect, creating safe havens in their political districts. And often they chafe at backing tough measures to stem gang activities, advocating instead for superficial solutions that may garner good press but have little impact.

But then again, it is a lot easier for the politicians to complain that it is some other state that is responsible for their inability or unwillingness to enforce their own laws. Or they could just don a hoodie.

(3,201 posts)Chicago can keep its crooks to itself. The only two things have changed since Al Capone threw the mayor down the steps of City Hall in 1924, in broad daylight, and in front of the Mayor's police detail:
The graft is transferred electronically to offshore banks instead of in cash in envelopes slipped to politicians in the dark.
The current "boss" of Chicago doesn't wear a fedora.

(12,194 posts)Perhaps they should try an approach that would not require electrified fences and checkpoints around the City of Chicago to be successful, rather than blaming the failure for their obviously unworkable policies on other jurisdictions.

(17,502 posts)or they graduated from the GW Bush School of Business. It looks like they sold the guns at a loss.
It looks more like a serious mark down, and not a mark up. If I'm going to risk serious time, its going to be worth my effort.

(1,534 posts)Who; Yahoo news? This is the article I woke up to this morning:
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/cutline/trayvon-martin-case-exposes-worst-media-210020839.html
"Trayvon Martin case exposes worst in media"
NBC...spliced two parts of the call together, making it appear as if Zimmerman had said, "This guy looks like he's up to no good. He looks black." In reality, Zimmerman was answering a dispatcher's question:Zimmerman: This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about.
Dispatcher: OK, and this guy--is he black, white or Hispanic?
Zimmerman: He looks black.
On the surface, this case sounds like an unjustified shooting to me, a case of the shooter causing the confrontation that let to the shooting. With reporting like this, though, I'm certainly withholding judgment until some actual facts come to light, rather than the "Hard Copy" sensationalism that's passed for reporting so far.
If some of you control types feel like jumping on the bandwagon after learning all you need to know from reports like this, though, feel free.
ellisonz
(27,709 posts)...we know quite a lot based on the evidence that's been released and leaked.
But: 1) Who's reporting on the evidence that's leaked? NBC apparently is not letting accuracy get in the way of ratings. 2) How do we know the released or leaked evidence is any less slanted than NBC's reporting?
Like I said, this appears to be a shooting that only happened because the shooter caused and escalated an avoidable encounter. That would make it murder, and that's inexcusable. However, I'm not going to hang the guy until we know a bit more about it.

(1,164 posts)What's in it for those who did? So, maybe we could just suspend the investigation, indictment, jury selection, and a trial and do away with Mr Zimmerman and be done with the matter? Afterall, the media can be counted on for reliable information on the story.
Did you have a major role or just a bit part in this which is becoming the template for this tragedy?

Seems like so far it's pretty simple.
I hate these stories that keep changing. Be awfully interesting when this all gets in front of a jury. But then, there are still people who think O.J. is

(54,770 posts)Sounds like there are enough guns in town. But I guess gun culture would like to see 10 million more added by 2020.
More guns and relaxed laws aren't the answer unless one is trying to increase number of Zimmermans walking around with a gun.
