DHS-funded video gives tips on how to survive a mass-shooter

http://www.federalnewsradio.com/473/2966001/DHS-funded-video-gives-tips-to-survive-a-shooter

Entitled "Run, Hide, Fight," the video depicts a fictional shooting incident at an office building.

"It may feel like just another day at the office, but occasionally life feels more like an action movie than reality," says a narrator.

The City of Houston's website offers these tips:

- Run if a safe path is available. Always try and escape or evacuate even if others insist on staying.
- Encourage others to leave with you but don't let the indecision of others slow down your own effort to escape.
- Once you are out of the line of fire, try to prevent others from walking into the danger zone and call 9-1-1.
- If you can't get out safely, find a place to hide.
- When hiding, turn out lights, remember to lock doors and silence your ringer and vibration mode on your cell phone As a last resort, working together or alone, act with aggression, use improvised weapons and fight.

They talked about this at all:
"As a last resort, working together or alone, act with aggression, use improvised weapons and fight."

One thing this is missing, 'be prepared to be considered a suspect as law enforcement cannot assume you are not the shooter, or not an accomplice, trying to escape the scene'.

The most lethal weapon mentioned for us is "throw hot coffee at them".

Most workplaces where I live have a no gun policy even though CCW is legal. They will fire you on the spot for bringing a weapon onto the premises. Which is amusing since we get so many death threats the receptionist has to sit behind bullet proof glass.

I had a few thoughts as I watched.

1) Nicely produced video.
2) I haven't seen that many skinny people in an office in the US in decades.
3) In the "fight" section, the guy holding the fire extinguisher as a club would have done better to use it as intended; a face full of foam or powder would be more disabling than a glancing blow to the head (and you still have the bottle in hand to bean the guy after he's blinded).
4) One thing we learned in anti-terrorism training in Iraq was that bullets tend to hug the floor, while rocket/mortar/grenade shrapnel tends to travel higher. Hit the decks for a mortar attack, stay off of 'em for bullets.
