Akron police told The Associated Press early Sunday that the woman is in critical condition.
Police say John Wise, of Massillon, entered the hospital shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday and went to see his wife, Barbara, in the intensive care unit, where she had been admitted a few days earlier. Authorities say Wise pulled out a handgun and shot his wife of 45 years.
Hospital spokesman Jim Gosky says one shot was fired.

(4,941 posts)My sympathies to the gentleman and his wife. It must have been a horrible decision for him to make. Not knowing what medical condition his wife was in, it must have been pretty bad for him to do this.

(206 posts)The sensational aspect of the headline makes it seem as if this was a domestic dispute shooting but when you get to the meat of the story, it strongly seems to be a case of assisted suicide.
I don't know what condition the wife was in, but obviously he had info that she was probably terminal and he wanted to end her suffering.
What were you trying to accomplish with this story? Guns are bad? Assisted suicide is bad? What?

(206 posts)but a case could be made that this could maybe be a compassionate use of a gun to end the suffering of a terminally ill loved one.
It'll be interesting to see the follow up on this story.

If this was euthanasia (and it sounds like it was) it should be part of the debate on legalizing and normalizing euthanasia for those who are suffering rather than as part of the ongoing gun debate.
/it's cruel to leave a dog to suffer for years of an incurable disease. It is compassionate to force a human to do so even against their expressed wishes. Huh?
