Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumChicago gangs don’t have to go far to buy guns
Maybe you heard about the less-restrictive gun laws in the South or the high-profile cases the feds have brought against gun traffickers moving weapons from Mississippi and other states to Chicago the Dixie pipeline.
But the truth is most guns recovered in crimes here were originally bought in Illinois. More specifically, in Cook County.
And the No. 1 supplier of those weapons is just a short drive from Chicago, Chucks Gun Store in south suburban Riverdale.

(20,709 posts)About half of Chicago's crime guns come from Illinios, the other half from out of state. This is why Rahm is pushing for tighter gun laws statewide. Because, guns can, umm, be carried from one place to another, so tight gun laws in Chicago are undermined by loose gun laws outside the city.
The only people who don't know about this are the gun fanatics, apparently.
We need to close that hole, shut it down, so that the hard work of the law enforcement community, the hard work of our community groups, the hard work of our faith-based community, the hard work of our parents [doesnt go to waste and] our laws are backing them up and keeping their kids safe, rather than making them more vulnerable, the mayor said.

(4,286 posts)only possibility?
And naturally, if I don't address Rahm and only Rahm, I am a gun fanatic?
LOL!
Chicago needs to deal with its gang and racism problem, among others. I've been to Chicago and I know people who lived there. The woman in the couple was culture shocked by the relations between races in more normal America when she left Chicago in adulthood. If Chicago could clean up their hellhole of a city and get rid of the rampant gangs, corruption, authoritarianism, racism, etc., guns would be a non-issue.
Chicago can no more legitimately dictate laws throughout the state to control guns in Chicago than the US can legitimately dictate laws in Latin America and Mexico to control drugs here. Since you allegedly oppose American exceptionalism, you should get that.
It always amazes me how principle-free gun control fanatics are. Unprincipled lunatic anti-gun mayors, for example, fiercely fight for "home rule" special laws for their cities that contrast with general state law, but they don't hesitate to try to impose their will on the rest of the state, or even the nation.

(20,709 posts)I'm always taken aback by just how much hatred there is towards Chicago from the pro-gunners. Sometimes I wonder if Grover Norquist and Ted Nugent and the rest of the NRA crowd actually enjoy the fact that the lax gun laws they are pushing cause so much gun violence and homicide in Chicago and other major cities.

(4,286 posts)Accurate synopsis of your ducking and dodging every point and lamely attempting to change the subject.
I guess it's the best you can do if you have no legitimate points and you lack the character to frankly face reality.

(3,291 posts)I hate gangs and corrupt politics. Chicago politics has been corrupt for several decades. If anything the unintended consequence of the cronyism is the gangs.
Nicely stated, TPaine7.
DanTex, it's gonna take more than "Blahblahblah" to counter TPaine7's argument, but I'm not really holding my breath in anticipation of any cogency on your part.

(881 posts)The solution to gang violence is to disarm the victims that get caught up in the crossfire?

(3,291 posts)If the firearms can be traced back to the store, then a 4473 was filled out. The police/ATF can EASILY find out who made the illegal straw purchase. I see a couple of things happening here.
1) The Chicago police are lazy and incompetent. Same difference ATF.
2) Chicago has a gang/crime problem. Local government is ineffective and seeks to shed blame.
3) The story is BULLSHIT and based on <half truths.

(7,720 posts)passed that would require handgun registration and a $65 per gun fee (one time, annual, ?) "... to arm police with the information they need to solve crimes and reduce illegal firearm transfers."
Does Emanuel really believe the criminals will register their handguns and pay the fee? This proposed law would do little to stop and/or solve gun crimes in Chicago.

(6,185 posts)But then again, keeping in mind that most of the U of C's research re: Crime and Guns is still funded by the Joyce Foundation, my confusion is understandable. I did note that the "study" doesn't seem to be able to differentiate between a straw purchase and a stolen gun, among other confusing issues.
I have been told, on these very boards, that all the gangs need to do is drive to Indiana or any other neighboring state and just walk into a gun store or gun show with cash. Then for a long time Daley blamed Mississippi, Alabama and a host of other Southern states for the guns in the streets.
But I guess the obvious answer is they can't come from any inside Chicago source, since there hasn't been a gun store in the city for decades.
For anyone keeping track, Rahm's call for statewide registration is already DOA in the legislature, just like Governor Quinn's call for another AWB here.
Rahm is doing a "fine" job of policing the city, no contracts for teachers, firemen or police, 1,200 fewer cops on the streets than 8 years ago and 17 citizens shot this weekend with 7 dead so far. But who cares if he fucks the unions over, he's a gun grabber, so be sure and applaud him
But thank heavens we have those big $$$ speeding cameras, $12 an hour parking meters, gorgeous flower pots on Michigan avenue and those nice wrought iron fences. That's the stuff that really counts in running a city.
