Related: About this forumMaybe a new death spewer tomorrow.
I'm going shopping in the morning, I'm going to ditch a PT145 that's too unreliable for my taste. I just can't figure out what I may like to pick up.
Maybe a revolver, maybe another semi, maybe nothing.
I'd like to get a new Home SD pistol to replace this sub compact 45.
So many great options out there in the sub 600 dollar range. My dream is to find a SA/DA compact size with an external safety and rail for mounting a light or laser. This may go out with me when hunting, but 99% of the time it'll never serve outside of my home.
Next is caliber choice...I have plenty of 9mm's so I'm now searching for a 40 or a 45, I have probably 500 rounds of 45 on hand so maybe a 45 replacement is in order. On the other hand 40 isn't that much more than 9 and 45 sure is.
I have my list of firearms I'm going to look at
Ruger P345 45
Sig P250 40 or 45
Maybe a Ruger SP101
Ruger SR40
Some taurus 38 or 357 revolver
Glock 23 (little over 5 bills)
Others.....LOL
So Recommend something.

(15,396 posts)I wouldn't mind a 3.8 XDM compact 40 or 45
They may be a tad out of range for what I'm looking for right now.

(15,396 posts)I'm pretty much looking for a compact to use as my primary home SD firearm, but it's also gotta be somewhat light because I want to carry it while fishing/hunting.
I only have 3 maybe 4 firearms in my budget this year, I always try and pick up something in the first month. Last year it was a 308 single shot.
Maybe pickup a stoeger coach gun I've been wanting for a while. (pretty woooooooood)

(49,445 posts)...trying to keep things on topic in here.
Try out an XD or XDm variant. I got to fire a service-size XD once, and it was very ergonomic and shot naturally to where I was looking.

(8,142 posts)Only reason I don't carry it is that it's a little large.
Except that mine is a .40.
Sold my FN (.40) Hi-Power today - needed the cash.

(15,396 posts)I did get to fondle a ruger LC9 for the first time. May have even made a sale to a man looking for a small cc pistol for when he's out pushing his wife in her wheelchair.
I looked the ruger p345 over it felt good but it was blued. I wish the decocker wasn't so flat....
Looked at a few Smith and ruger 357's
I did like the feel of the sig 250 in 45 and 40 they seem to be a good bargain.
All well maybe next time...

(15,396 posts)Well I traded my old Mini14 people killer for a Sig 229 death spewer. Problem is this thing is so new and pretty I don't want to shoot it. So I must now buy something that won't make me feel guilty to shoot.
The only hitch is this is a "special edition" Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003
I'm not too crazy about the gold writing on it but she sure is pretty...
Oh and just for kicks, I traded with a guy off the innerwebs I've never met before in my life. Does that make me a hidden criminal?

(906 posts)available in 9mm, .40 S&W, or .357 Sig, reliable and accurate right out of the box, and the price is in the neighborhood right at 4 bills NIB.

(15,396 posts)but like he said before he brought it in...."I'd have to have almost what it takes to replace it." But I was willing to take a look at it....
2 things I didn't like about his, the hammer seemed to be really stubby, and the decocker didn't act right compared to other sigs I'd felt.
I wish they made a sig pro in the 45...a friend has a P250 and it's a sweet shooter I just wanted a SA/DA.
I may however.com be willing to pick up a p250 now that I have a metal framed sig.
My buddy also brought in his 226 and 220 but for show and tell only.....Ummmmmm 2200000000000000000000000.

(906 posts)the only fault it had was the issue of a proprietary rail, the SP2022, corrected that weakness. Couldn't agree more with the sentiment about a .45 ACP version.
Now, something that should really set you to thinking.........a Sig P220 in 10mm.

(906 posts)but I'm a huge fan of .357 Sig as a round.
My SP2022 is set up for .357Sig, and I've the coversion barrels for both .40S&W and a Bar-Sto 9mm as well.

(8,142 posts)They even carry a compact version based on the Colt commander .45. I'm gonna look at their GI 1911 in the next month, runs starting at $369 but on average $400. Their compact is a little higher at $429.

(15,396 posts)1911's....considering the price I may have to consider one. I've wanted a 1911 for a few years.
Other than the gun snobs everyone on my gun forums seems to think the Rock Islands are a great deal and that they work.
rl6214
(8,142 posts)Of course they love their high dollar guns but say their Rock Island 1911s work BETTER than some of their high dollar guns.

(86 posts)with something that doesn't weigh 8 pounds (well not really but it's damn heavy). I'd love to find an older S&W K-38 like the one I had years ago or even a 29 Highway Patrolman with that cool 3.5" barrel. My Colt has the 2" which makes it a little lighter but it just 'looks' funny to me. I'm a real old-schooler and I like revolvers, S&Ws the most. I figure if I can't hit what I need to in 5 or 6 shots I'm in the wrong fight anyway haha. (I taught marksmanship at a police dept years ago) I do like to shoot semiautos (including my legal Tec9) but they just don't 'feel' right to these old hands.

(12 posts)Look into the Walther PPQ, it's pretty hot right now among serious shooting circles. Lots of Glock guys going over to the Walther. It fits the hand very well; very ergonomic. It also has the best out of the box trigger on the market. They go for $480-520, pretty good deal for a very high quality German produced handgun. I think it gives Heckler & Koch a run for it's money.

(15,396 posts)I went to buy a Pps in 40 a few years back and left with an m&p 9c, I loved the feel and quality of the PPS.

(12 posts)So far, so good. I like it so much, I bought a second one. One to train with and another to carry day to day. Before I bought a PPQ i'd only used da/sa, but I've grown to like having the same trigger feel from shot to shot.

(4,069 posts)I have a SS SP101, 2 1/2" snubbie that is a fantastic weapon and just bought a NIB surplus Walther P38/P1 for $399.

(15,396 posts)A good revolver is one of the top pistols on my list to acquire.
probably just ahead of a 1911, and just behind another reliable 45 and a pf9
I want a pf9 to carry while hunting, fishing, and hiking. If it proved reliable I may even carry it for CC....

(10,201 posts)1. Reliable
2. Fits my hands very well
3. Very few parts
4. No tools needed to break down
5. According to John McClain they are undetectable by airport scanners.
Glocks are not for everyone. The grip angle is a huge factor.
Get a good holster no matter what.
Dissonance
(12 posts)The already mentioned RIA 1911 .45 ACP.
And
The EEA (Tanfoglio) Witness, mine is in 10mm auto.
The RIA is about as close as you can get to a newly made GI issue 1911A1, I believe they are even made on some of the same machinery that was sold off to Armscor after WWII. Mine has been a flawless performer, though I will admit to polishing the feed ramp and putting a little chamfer on the mouth of the chamber for insurance when feeding hollowpoints, but I do that to any 1911 that falls into my hands. Aside from being a niece piece to begin with, they're excellent starting places for building custom guns, being bone stock and all steel, you can have them set up just about anyway you want down the line. A lot of guys I know bought them for exactly that reason, they're high enough quality to be worth customizing while being affordable enough to take risks with. Mine was $399 brand new, and I've seen them for that or less on the secondary market.
Now the EEA in 10mm is a different animal, it's essentially an Italian CZ75 clone, which means a standard DA/SA automatic with a 1911 style safety than can be applied in hammer up or down position, and a double wide 15 round magazine with the grip size to match. I happen to like the full size version of this gun as I shoot full power 10mm loads out of it, which can reach into .41 magnum territory when it comes to power and the extra weight helps make that a more pleasant experience. It's not nearly as customizable as the RIA and the single action trigger isn't as nice, but aside from the width the size is similar for concealment purposes, and the weight is also close until you stick that full magazine into the thing. Mine has been as reliable as the RIA, is very accurate, is fun (and LOUD) to shoot, and cost me $325 used from a gun shop.
10mm is a bit more expensive to shoot than .40, especially if you search out the full power loads (Corbon loads one, as does Hornady), but the power and flexibility of the round are also much greater than the .40.

(15,396 posts)I pocket carried my lcp this summer. I switched to a fobus holster during the winter...but today it was warm enough for just a T so I found a new holster. It was a pretty good first time out. I may just find a holster more LCP sized for Sunday's now.
My 229 is a range gun and house gun only, I don't plan on carrying it concealed, I have three fine subcompacts to do that duty.
I still want a railed house/range 45 that I'm open to suggestions.

(54,770 posts)Did you ever get your flak jacket to go with your guns?
ileus
(15,396 posts)I've put that off until I get 3 or 4 more firearms on my must have list.
6.8 ar for hunting
Full sized 45 for plinking and HD (must have laser/light rail)
pf9 to carry while hiking,hunting,fishing
Double barrel coach gun.....Ummmmmmmm 12ga goodness.

(12 posts)I bought a certified pre-owned P229 DAK last year. I love it, my only .40, perfect size, and balance.

(15,396 posts)The owner did shoot it 20 or 30 times. The rails have no wear, the only wear is on the barrel it's in amazing shape...
I'd wanted a 40 just because I didn't have one, this thing showed up on a facebook group from a guy just down the road. I'm not overly hip on the gold writing but I do like the American flag on top.

(6,268 posts)It's a small frame revolver (like a J-Frame) so it can be easily carried... but it is all stainless and has a 3" barrel so it's really easy to shoot unlike the airweights. The SP101 is built a little tank. It will make a fabulous CCW or backup gun. It's the gun I'm going to teach my wife how to shoot with.
I cut one ragged hole @ 7 yards with .38+P loads and shot 158gr magnum loads well too.
Regular .38 special practice rounds and self defense round are very mild and easy to shoot.
I'm going to load it up with 158gr light recoil .357 magnum... stout but managable.
I got around to firing some full house Buffalo Bore .357 magnum (1700fps... really hot loads) through it today. Despite my Ruger being nearly 2X the weight of a S&W Airweight and having the longer barrel it was still to much to be comfortable. In fact it was pretty painful and not all that fun. I'll stick wih the .38+P or intermediate .357 - they're OK to shoot with.
3" Ruger SP101:

(15,396 posts)OneTenthofOnePercent
(6,268 posts)Out of a dozen guns (mostly pistols) it's my first revolver and it just feels "right". Simple.
Something about it is just really sexy. I feel like Star Wars Episode IV is applicable here...
"Not as random or as clumsy as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age."
I usually carry a Glock 19 or LCP but I may start carrying this little guy. The 3" SP101 is near identical in size as the G19 but conceals much easier because it's not blocky. I think the 2" SP101 would be a great CCW piece... just as small as an Airweight J-Frame or Ruger LCR except with the comfort and heft of all stainless. However, I got the 3" so that it would be easier to teach a beginner (my wife) how to handle a gun. I wanted the 4.2" SP101 for her but it was backordered several weeks.
Even though this is my first wheelgun, I'm already eyeing another:
5" S&W Model 686+ (K/L frame .357 magnum)
Dissonance
(12 posts)The S&W K frame .357s, especially the Model 19 with a 3-4 inch barrel. They used to call that a "cop's compromise" because it fell between a 2 inch snubbie and full size 6 inch barrel. For me, it's just the right size to ride comfortably in a horizontal shoulder rig without raising a bulge in the back of my jacket, and the sight radius is plenty long to allow for excellent accuracy. It's also heavy enough to comfortably shoot the magnum rounds, while .38s are nearly as soft shooting as .22s from a lighter gun. I used to use a Model 27 to shoot bowling pin matches, but I switched to the 19 as it's way more practical for carrying and just as accurate as the 27.

(8,614 posts)He had finally finished a nasty divorce and I have been keeping it one of my safes because of a RO against him. He was getting ready to move, had a $40+ per hour job offer in Canada, so he sold it to me foe $40 plus the $100 he owed me. I took his offer and moved the rifles files to the "I own"collum in the computer.
No background check, no paperwork other than a handwritten bill of sale.
As for the rifle, it was refinished, stock and metal, 10-12 years ago, and still looks like new!
