The real world: armed guards in school = bad idea

We actually had an armed guard in my junior high school; it was a reasonably-tough school in New York City in the 1970s. Don't remember if it was a cop or some other type of guard.

A bad kid somehow got hold of the guard's gun. Amusing standoff ended with nobody hurt or killed. My parents moved us out to the suburbs shortly thereafter.

@#$% happens. Guns are an instant @#$% multiplier.

Perhaps we should keep guns of any sort out of schools.

3. No. The School Officers will be chosen as part of the Staff, even though paid differently by the gun

sector. We're not talking Rambos coming on board. These will likely be vets, retired military and re-trained and tested for their ability to be with kids. Just like the old cop on the beat, he'll just be at school. Job is to protect and serve or course, but to particpate in school life. Get to know all of the kids, their parents, the staff, be part of school activities, get birthday cupcakes on birthdays, cruise around the lunchroom, hang out on the playground.

And because most elementary schools are staffed by females, this guy is going to serve as a role model...yes he's got a gun and there will plenty or presentations and classroom visits and integrate with the Helpers in our Communities curriculum.

They will end the bullying. He will be the only one whose job it is to move through the crowds of kids...teachers and principals are not always there. Kids will befriend him, perhaps confide in him...especially about the bullying.

It will be good...not some cataclysmic descent into tyranny as some decry.

But we have pretty strong empirical evidence that leaving schools defenseless doesn't work, at least as long as we don't provide adequete mental health care.
