Showtime's 'The Fourth Estate' shows how the 'failing' New York Times succeeds in the Trump era

Watched it yesterday, was again today. I think it has several pasts

The challenges of print journalism in the age of fake news, a media-hostile White House and shrinking revenue are at the heart of Showtime's four-part documentary "The Fourth Estate."

The series, which premieres Sunday, follows the New York Times' Washington, D.C., and New York City newsrooms in the days and months following President Trump's 2017 inauguration. Documentarian Liz Garbus ("What Happened, Miss Simone?&quot and her team embed with reporters and editors as they scramble to cover a presidency that generates news and scandal by the hour.

It was fascinating to watch the reporters' jaws drop at each new findings about the Russia discoveries.

Do they show any details about that story that helped get Trump elected “FBI sees no ties to Russia?” Would be interesting to know who was the source. NY FBI officers?

I love the NYT and I consider it the paper of record. But they have many problems - cowed by bothsidesism, a poor opinion page editor who has hired mediocrities like Stephens and Weiss, and the lack of a public editor who can challenge them on errors.

It would be great if the series covered anything about the public editor, what she did about the Russia (and Clinton Cash) stories that helped Trump, and why she was fired.

Interesting that while the D.C. office would normally be just an extension, this time it is where the stories originate. And they have to fight to keep the headlines that they determined provide the info.
