What is your favorite online sources of news? I'm of course not talking about mainstream - corporate or npr - news outlets, I've included a list of the kind of websites I'm thinking of:

I personally feel I browse Democracy Now! and commondreams more than anything, those two sites seem to cover most necessary news items to be found. They're all very good sites, but I feel I spend more time on those than the others. alternet is also usually pretty interesting. I encourage people to post sources of information that I haven't listed as this thread is to kind of share things like that. Also feel free to post about your admiration for investigative journalist/advocacy/watchdog groups that also post great sources of news that they uncover (Public Citizen, Common Cause, FAIR, etc.) Also polling agents such as the Pew Research Center and Gallup often post interesting things..

8. I agree

I was recently called a "sheep" by a right-wing relative because I follow the crowd and believe anything I hear on mainstream media. This was of course in response to my disagreeing with something he heard from Rush, Fox or or some other spigot of the propaganda pipeline. What he doesn't know is that I haven't paid attention to ANY domestic mainstream media for over a decade. I surprised him by totally agreeing with his assessment of the unreliability of the American mainstream, and went on to say that if you really want accurate facts, you have to go to an outside source. Domestic media always has the potential to be biased, but a country will usually report accurately on it's neighbors since there's no motive to skew the facts. There's no political gain.

Since his information pipeline obviously has the diameter of a drinking straw, he had no reply.

I was actually looking around local magazine stores recently in Houston and couldn't find The Nation anywhere. I was trying to buy a physical copy of it for occasional light reading. Pretty disappointed I couldn't find it, rather than reflecting the quality of the magazine, it certainly reflects the dismal quality of stores like Barnes & Noble :/ Interestingly they had Z Magazine, Yes! Magazine, etc. I always thought The Nation was supposed to be more popular.

7. For world news

I tend to find the BBC fairly propagandistic. Contrast the stories they have about foreign policy to those found on say, www.axisoflogic.com (an exceptional foreign policy website).

I remember distinctly when Evo Morales kicked USAID out of Bolivia the BBC produced some pretty context free propagandistic coverage. USAID's constant illustrious involvement in US-backed coups was totally omitted.
