U.S. Army base Fort Hood, named for a Confederate major general who led troops into battle against the United States during the Civil War, will be renamed for a Latino postwar four-star Army general.

The new name will honor Gen. Richard Cavazos, who is noted for his leadership during the Korean War, when he earned the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Cross for leading the Puerto Rican regiment “The Borinqueers.” He also served in Vietnam.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin ordered the renaming Thursday.

Cavazos is a Mexican American from Kingsville, Texas, who commanded III Corps, headquartered at Fort Hood, among other assignments.

There are worse names, but I’ll need a minute.

MSG Benavidez was one hell of a warrior. I never met him, but I’m not fit to shine his boots.

I’m right there with you.

There’s is probably a 1000 names .

I’d like to know who picked that and why.

Maybe some disgruntled people. There is definitely a lot of ill feelings and I say jealousy. Towards anything elite or special operations.

Remember Shinseki taking away the black beret and given it the common soldiers. Berets used to represent people in airborne units.

The CSA took away the blue berets from the 101st. We pushed a lot of Kentucky into Tennessee then!

Yes, berets have lots of meaning to the people who earned them. Other people don't get it and never will.

When I was assigned there in 1971 l, after a year serving in SE Asia, I immediately applied to be sent back. Other Vietnam veterans whom I met there also volunteered to be reassigned back to Vietnam to avoid the Texas boredom of having nothing to do in a “warehouse” of daily monotony. It was an unexpected surprise to see them again in the Oakland Overseas Replacement Station when we met a year later, waiting ti be discharged to civilian life again and on with our lives.
