Between November 2009 and August 2013, the Bell County Jail housed one of its most notorious inmates — Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan. While the former Army major and psychiatrist made world headlines during his trial last year — including being helicoptered to and from the Fort Hood courthouse — his stay at the county jail in Belton was, at least in part, normal procedure.

In addition to housing civilian prisoners, the Bell County Jail is also under contract with the U.S. government to house Fort Hood’s military inmates. In essence, it acts as the Fort Hood stockade.

Bell County housed 111 military prisoners, including Hasan, in 2013.

“These are soldiers who are facing military charges,” said Lt. Byron Shelton, a jailer with of the Bell County Sheriff’s Department, which runs the jail. “We hold them pretrial and post-trial.”
