Bat colony found at Lackland dorm
By Sig Christenson : January 26, 2014 : Updated: January 26, 2014 11:18pm

SAN ANTONIO — A bat colony has been found in an aging dormitory complex that is home to hundreds of basic training recruits, the Air Force said Sunday.

The colony of 500 to 600 bats was described by the Air Force as small compared with one at Bracken Cave north of San Antonio, where millions live each summer.

Around 900 recruits continue to live in the dorm complex with the bats sleeping within the walls. The dormitory, meantime, has been sealed to stop the bats from entering any living quarters, said Brent Boller, a spokesman for Joint Base San Antonio.

“We're taking every precaution to ensure that the bats don't re-enter the living quarters,” Boller said.
