A Marine brigade from Camp Pendleton took command of coalition forces in southwestern Afghanistan as the 13-year campaign enters its critical final phase, the International Security Assistance Force announced Thursday.
Brig. Gen. Daniel Yoo, commanding general of Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, took charge of U.S. and international forces in Helmand and Nimruz provinces during a transfer of authority ceremony Wednesday at Camp Leatherneck.
Yoo is expected to be the last NATO commander in the Southwest before the international combat mission in Afghanistan ends this year and Afghan forces assume full responsibility for securing the country.
He replaced Maj. Gen. Lee Miller, the Camp Lejeune, N.C., Marine who spent a year in command of the region and 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).
