VIRGINIA BEACH

Two Navy jet squadrons slated to leave Oceana Naval Air Station this year as part of the military's strategic shift toward Asia are staying in place until at least 2016, the Navy has decided.

The relocation of as many as two dozen F/A-18 Super Hornets and 500 sailors and their families could mean an economic loss of $42 million per year for the region, according to the city of Virginia Beach.

The shift of two squadrons west has been planned for years, but repeated delays have kept the aircraft in Virginia Beach.

"In the basing plan, Oceana was always slated to have eight squadrons of Super Hornets," said Ted Brown, a Fleet Forces spokesman.
