The Navy’s fleet of surface warships got a new boss on Thursday.

Newly promoted Vice Adm. Thomas Rowden took over as commander of Naval Surface Forces, a job that puts him in charge of oversight of the Navy’s destroyers, cruisers, littorals and amphibious ships.

Rowden assumed the post at a change of command ceremony aboard the littoral ship Coronado at San Diego Naval Base.

Copeman said that his highest achievement was putting a focus on sailors and convincing Navy brass to put more crew members on ships.
