NATO's top commander says alliance limited in understanding Russian moves

NATO’s commander U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove made a surprising admission to American lawmakers the other day.

He acknowledged NATO doesn’t have any real idea what the Russians are up to.

“Russian military operations in Ukraine and the region more broadly have underscored that there are critical gaps in our collection and analysis,” Breedlove told the Senate Armed Services committee. “Some Russian military exercises have caught us by surprise, and our textured feel for Russia’s involvement on the ground in Ukraine has been quite limited.”

Breedlove told the senators that the Pentagon first learned through social media that the recent Russian military exercise, highlighted by the Kremlin as being tied to the Arctic, was in fact much larger in scope. The Russians had announced on social media that it was widening the scope of the exercise to include eastern Europe.
