George Will: Women in combat ‘dumbing down the standards’ because of ‘anatomical facts’

George Will: Women in combat ‘dumbing down the standards’ because of ‘anatomical facts’
By David Edwards
Sunday, January 27, 2013 15:04 EST

Conservative columnist George Will on Sunday argued that women should not be allowed in combat because of “certain anatomical facts,” ignoring that ABC Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz had pointed out that she interviewed female service members who were capable of carrying “6-foot, 4-inch Marines.”

Appearing on an ABC News panel, Will told Raddatz that the military was effectively lowering the bar by lifting the ban on women in combat, even though the Pentagon had said both men and women would be subjected to the same physical standards.

“That’s what they always say,” Will opined. “Let me give you an example. No Child Left Behind said we’re going to have 100 percent proficiency by 2014 in reading and math in the schools. And the scary thing is we might because the only way we’ll get there is because is by dumbing down the standards, which is actually underway. The question is, will we change the physical fitness requirements so that we don’t have a disparate impact? Are we going to gender norm the requirements?”

“Give you an example, you’ve been out, Martha, in these combat zones?” he continued. “You’re a 6-foot, 4-inch, 240-pound Marine and you’re injured and you need the Marine next to you to carry you back to safety, and the Marine next to you is 5-foot woman who weighs 115 pounds. It’s relevant.”

As you demonstrate so regularly, Bowtie Boy (R).

How does a priveliged preppy elite 1% Republican Chickenhawk overpaid sneering propaganda artiste like Will, who dodged the draft like most of his BigMouth Republican cronies, get off spewing bullshit 'opinions' about who can serve in the military?

Freaking smarmyass republican chickenhawks are just totally pathetic.

His example of a "5-foot woman who weighs 115 pounds" in the Marine Infantry is especially idiotic.

One of the recurring arguments against women serving in combat appears on its face to be just good common horse sense: women just don't have the upper body strength to carry a heavy male soldier out of combat. The thing is, you don't need much upper body strength to carry a guy out of combat. This will come as a surprise to certain pundits, but troops are not trained to carry each other like babies. The point is to rescue your comrade, not rescue your comrade while wailing on your pecs.

snip

American troops are trained use the fireman's carry, which is a way of sort of slinging a dude over your shoulder, as seen in the GIF at right. It's shockingly easy. It's so easy that in instructional YouTubes, the carried sometimes laugh with surprise. Earlier this month, on vacation, I ran in circles while fireman-carrying my (admittedly indie-rock thin) 6'2" male friend on a Miami beach, because it was funny. There are tons of YouTubes of women carrying men this way.

Audie Murphy wouldn't have been qualified for combat. When he enlisted he was 5'5", weighing 110 lbs. Yet he went on to be the most decorated American soldier in history.

The myth that women are petite, vulnerable little flowers of Victorian femininity...oh, please! If Little George needs a Demo, I would volunteer to sling him over my shoulder and pitch him right into the trash--and I can do it, because I'm a 6'1" 150 lb female athlete. Guys who tried to come at me with the "men are stronger" idea never got very far.

But seriesly: I'm aware I'm the exception, but like everyone else, I'm really fed up with Old White Man -isms. What next, George? Are women gonna freak out every month when their hormones go whack? Because EVERYONE knows we're psycho PMS-ers who can't handle it when life gets hard.

This guy needs to Go Away.

Time for this guy to NEVER, EVER appear on any TV show ever again.
Even his well-written MEN AT WORK is a narrow minded, tunnel vision viewpoint of baseball.

My ex-wife, Chinese, is 5'1" and 100 pounds TOPS. I am 5' 11" 195'ish. She could carry me up stairs!
...of course she practices Kung Fu. (real kung fu, not the stuff one usually sees) And if she did NOT want me to pick her up, no matter how hard I tried I could not get her off the ground.

Look at Will. Skinny, pasty skinned little wimp..

Having some raving pundit who's obviously as far out as he is far right just provides another opportunity for a slam-dunk by any and all Dems that care to.
