Computer for a senior who is also a technophobe

anyone use one of those computers that is sup'd to be particularly for seniors?
a friend of mine who is 60 and never used a computer, and is a technophobe, got himself a touch-screen laptop with W. 8 installed.

I am trying to convince him to turn it back for one with W. 7 installed.
Then I remembered seeing these 'senior computers' advertised in magazines, and thot maybe that would be the best for him.

If I can convince him to give up the bells and whistles of his laptop.

thanks for any feedback.

make it all the way to age 60 without ever using a computer? It's not as though they just showed up eight years ago.

I'm 65 and I've been using computers since I was 20.

My real point is that 60 simply isn't that old. In any case, I'm not certain a touch screen is the way to go, unless he never had personal acquaintance with a typewriter keyboard ever, in which case he probably would want a touch screen. More to the point, the real down side of never having had a computer until now is that they are far more complicated than they ought to be (I have a five minute tirade on that) and he's starting out at a huge disadvantage if this is his first computer.

Too bad CompUSA isn't still around, because they used to have good classes for beginners.

Is there a local junior college where he lives? They should have continuing ed type classes that will introduce a novice to computers.

If he need to go through a learning curve anyway he might as well start with windows 8. It's annoying but it's also not rocket science.
