But there are just some posters out there that think we just fell up the turnip truck. Good Lord...From the poster who didn't think comparing a Black man to an ape is racist to posters who think they have an insight into our community from reading a newspaper, some people think they have us all figured out
Fuck em....got to call them on the bullshir

(31,688 posts)It's shocking that they think they can engage in polite bigotry then play all innocent - then wonder why I'm looking for the garbage truck. Amazing!
They aren't very street smart.

(53,475 posts)I didn't know about the "black man to ape comparison at all (is there a link), but the recent "black women's hair thread was also out of bounds.
I'm starting to wonder about this site and the lack of action taken by the admin. to weed these kind of posts out.

(2,286 posts)About that racist Michael Brown song sung at the police retirement party. Said referencing King Kong was not racist
Talk about a disconnect

Admins gotta understand that DU has now become DI and that has got to change, cause people are leaving here rapidly, I am getting tired of saying goodbye to people I respect, BronxBoy.

(90,202 posts)I think DU is on its way to becoming segregated into little "safe houses": BOG, AA, HOF, and the like, where hatefulness is not allowed. Other than that, what's to be done about DU's descent into a cesspit?

(2,286 posts)A thread about Black women's hair on a predominantly White board is destined for failure
Spoken by a Black man who had the scars of innocently getting in the way of sistas and their hair

(14,498 posts)I'm not sure that someone who "doesn't think that complaining a Black man to an ape" is racist is much of a "demographic".

(14,498 posts)That's " COMPARING a black man....". ( I'm using a loaner computer. Can't cut and paste yet.)
But the ball is still in your court, I do believe.
How does that comprise a "demographic?"
BronxBoy
(2,286 posts)DU is predominantly White and only on a predominantly White site would such a thought be not only expressed but fairly unchallenged

(34,648 posts)If i could time travel I'd take some second amendment materials to help the people against those 'illegal immigrants'. A few thousand AR15's and a crap load of ammo would do the trick.
The Boston Tea Party didn't look very civilized to me. Wasted all that tea. Then they tore up their own neighborhoods with their little 'rebellion'.

(14,177 posts)I have on more than one occasion gone off on a polite and reasonable person. They were politely infringing on my common sense or politely insulting me doesn't matter either way I am going to go off. You should see the look on their face when I do that. Nothing but pure shock and they spit and sputter trying to defend themselves then they say "let's be reasonable here" meaning that they think being insulting is a reasonable position and I am being unreasonable for the audacity to stand up for myself, no thanks you can have your "reason", I will keep my fire.
I have seen this played out many many times in my life where someone is politely racist, sexist, classist, or homophobic. It's time to be impolitely vocal and call them out loudly and obnoxiously, clown on them if you wish. I will laugh my butt off when that happens, I know cuz I have seen it and that was what I did.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I also cuss out people who say ' no disrespect...', then proceed to disrepect me.
It is definately time to never shut the fuck up. If we gotta be uncomfortable for no good reason , then they can be uncomfortable for making me uncomfortable.

(14,177 posts)but, not on purpose. I used to work in a warehouse so the looks I would get and sometimes the attitude. Not from the guys I worked with at least rarely anyway, most the time like 99.999% of the time they were cool. Mostly a very progressive group. But, sheesh some of the stuff people from other departments would do and say. My boss also cool he didn't get on me too much about my mouth. He mostly just shook his head. He laughed when another manager suggested that he should control me better.

(23,340 posts)was quite astonishing to me.
So many on DU were in such extreme denial about it made it very clear to me that this is another place where white DU doesn't know this information at all. It is like the white privilege discussions, starting from scratch.

(170,964 posts)What are us white people on DU missing about 'cultural appropriation', and what does that mean?
Me, I treat people as they treat me. I don't care the color, just the quality. It's a good thing!

In it I posited that DU (which she said was turning into DI) was becoming a series of "safe houses" like the BOG and AA. Then it turned out I'm in someone else's safe house.

(26,582 posts)The know it alls, failure to read critically and sometimes to just shut the hell up.
I'm a white woman, I don't dare pretend I know at all what is like to grow up as a minority or face discrimination or be worried I'm gonna get shot by the cops walking down the street. The hair thread was beyond disgusting. And any poster that discusses "white culture" without the use of sarcasm is...well not something I can say out loud.
I really wonder if these people live and work in some white enclave and have never had friends of color?
MrScorpio
(73,626 posts)Racist motherfuckers can't help themselves. They sign up here, spew their BS, only to get tossed out on their ass after couple of posts, all for what?
They're a bunch of hostile assholes who get off on the attention. Basically, they're small minded morons who have no ide how stupid and racist they are.
Guess what
In the big picture, they don't matter.
So fuck 'em.

(24,780 posts)But I have enough Black friends that I can empathize. Unfortunately I'll never know.
That said, I have a couple or so pet peeves. One is whites calling each other the N word. I've blurted out shut up, its pissed me off so badly.
Another is white liberals, in demonstrating how open snd liberal they are saying when they look at a person they "don't see color". More than a few here at DU say it. I think to do so denies who that person is and where they came from, their family and heritage. I think it's insulting.
As for cultural appropriation, in everyday life, it's a white person's sad attempt to be cool. In a way I guess it is a bit of flattery if it's true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But it also ignores everything else that goes with being Black. And it makes the white person look foolish.
tammywammy
(26,582 posts)The importance of diversity is trying to understand differences and most importantly respecting them. So called ignoring color, is to ignore the basic differences we all have from each other, including not just race, but it extends to class and sex as well.

(24,544 posts)And they are the worst. Because they DO see color. EVERYONE sees color and to pretend otherwise is just incredibly stupid.
As a black woman, I WANT people to see my color. I am proud to be black. What I don't want is all of the bullshit judgements, stereotypes and pre-judgings that come with it.
babylonsister
(170,964 posts)and don't see color or let her color affect me. All I see is a great worker who's been there longer than I have, a woman who helps me when I need it, a caring mom, a good wife, and a great woman.
Sometimes color is irrelevant.
