Selma - The movie

Make sure everybody you know sees it, especially the white folks who are so sure racism is dead and gone.

Then make them watch

Telling white people they have to stop being you know what, doesnt work, even the liberal ones react you know how.

Maybe one day they will get it.

Maybe these movies will help.

I was thinking lines for miles sorta like 12 years a slave but it didn't do well at the box office. Very surprised by that.

and it is beyond sad that there are now so many voting laws intended to prevent people from voting. It has to stop.
People should also watch the bonus feature about the museum. The host there reminds us that the right to vote is still ongoing. Too many believe it has been settled but it hasn't.

edited this movie, but I wish they would put a new version out with a summary at the end of the vicious attack on voting rights by the SC recently.

Showing all the harm done

at least at the end where they show the individuals and what happened to them, I thought a paragraph or interviews could have been included about the continued assault on voting rights - including the awful Supreme Court decision.

Weird that such an important movie isnt available other than to buy.

Maybe Spike Lee wants it that way, not sure.

I bet not.

Just seems weird.

I mean at this point he could do a deal with Netflix, but for some reason, no deal.

Spike would have little to lose, nobody is buying the movie anymore, so I wonder what is up with that.

I wanted to watch the movie Skokie the other night. No one has it. It was a TV movie. Important movie in its own right. The only places that had it are those illegal places. I am not going to steal movies and I sure am not giving my credit card information to an illegal place that supposed to be free.

Sorry to hear that about Malcolm X. I was looking forward to watching it tonight

It came as two discs (but only counted as one). The second disc has a great documentary about Malcolm X from the early 1970's. It includes a lot of footage of him.

Why it's not on streaming, I don't know. It may have to do with the distributor and whatever deal was made.

I agree with you that it should be available for streaming on both amazon prime and netflix. It's a really interesting question, worth looking into.

These kinds of tremendously historical movies should all be available for streaming on all platforms. They should be easily accessible for everyone regardless of the platform!

She became both the first female bishop and the first African-American bishop in the Episcopal Church and worldwide Anglican communion in 1989.

She marched in Selma with Martin Luther King.

Here is her remembrance of it. Check it out about the 8:00 mark.

Really great movie. The actors who played MLK, Coretta & John Lewis, all three of them were just outstanding.

The director Ava DuVernay, she is a voice that I hope to hear from a great deal more. I've read that she's being discussed as the first woman director of a Marvel movie. She grew up not far from Selma. Here's her link on imdb. There's a lot of great quotes from her.

many AfAm folks dont know this history either, I bet.

God the fucking courage it took just to be a AfAm person at that time, let alone an activist.

Amazing.

So much needed learning from history. Here's an interview with Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael). He was deeply involved at that time and helped bring black history classes to colleges. In part 5 he's asked what he would most recommend to young people. He says study history.
