'CNNs Racist Depiction of The Black Church and Gay Marriage'
http://www.eurweb.com/2012/05/cnns-racist-depiction-of-the-black-church-and-gay-marriage/
The author of the piece seems to be implying that black church opposition to gay marriage is hypocritical, in large part because the bible being quoted by Christians is the same one that promoted the institution of slavery.
I was immediately irked by the insinuation that somehow, anyone who opposes gay marriage is driven by the same ignorance that led some enslavement of other human beings. CNN is a network that has shown itself to be in support of gay rights (Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon are members of the gay community, and the network supported Lemons book about the agony of being black and gay). The position is admirable, since we can appreciate the concept of providing equal rights to everyone.
I dont oppose gay marriage myself, but I was annoyed by the CNN article. What bothered me most about CNNs depiction of the black church is that it is one that wreaks of the kind of liberal paternalism that treats African Americans as if we are savages who need to be educated by white folks. The comparison of gay marriage opposition to slavery is a deliberate effort to poke at the political pressure point of African Americans, reducing our most painful collective experience into a political football. Its no different from telling a woman that she should protest the labor practices of Wal-Mart because she was once raped by a Wal-Mart employee.
The bolded bit I actually agree with. And I along with just about every black person on the planet am confused as hell that this seems to be THE issue, the ONLY issue in which the American media gives a flying fishstick about our opinion and seeks us out, but only if the results can be skewed to portray us in the most negative way possible.
The rest of this piece I really have no idea what the brother is raving about. And this ain't the first time.

i definitely see the point of the excerpt you bolded, Number23. outrageously, that liberal paternalism is nauseatingly invariably predictable.
i am still reading, and my mind is trying to wrap around the 'he said about what he wrote about what they said' quality of the flood of commentary they are all using us all to shout about.
more when i've read it.
thank you for posting it!

(8,775 posts)Everyone's New Favorite Story: Black People, the President and Gay Marriage

One of my least favorite news stories is back! You remember it from the Proposition 8 saga. It's the one about black people hating gay people. Unless you're that unfortunate black person who also happens to be gay. I suppose you're involved with some "war within." Wait? You're not? You just live as both a gay and a black American? Well, damn. Who knew?
-snip-
When the president first announced that his stance on gay rights had "evolved" to being pro-gay marriage, the person you were most likely to hear complaining on TV was the Family Research Council's Tony Perkins, or some other white person, usually conservative, male and often Republican, giving the counter argument. But that quickly got boring as it was obvious these dudes had nothing new to add. What was the hotter angle?
-snip-
Of course, we're forgetting that there are a lot of black people who are also fine with gay marriage and what the president said was in-line with their views. From average folks on the street to me to Will Smith and Jay-Z to activist/Black Panther Huey P. Newton from beyond the grave.
But those people are boring and don't fit a media narrative. What's going to get you more buzz? A black people agree-a-thon or this?

(24,544 posts)SO much truth in that piece. So much news that folks really need to read and understand.
"The top issues for African Americans are jobs and the economy," said David Bositis, senior research associate at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, whose scholarship focuses on black civic engagement. "In surveys on what African-American voters consider to be the most important problems in the country, which I often ask when I poll, gay marriage does not even show up."
There are way too many blacks that are against marriage equality, but the idea that we somehow own or even corner the market in this area is so stupid. What Mr. Bositis has said is very much line with what I hear among my black friends/family. Either we're in favor or it's really not on the radar. The religious blacks that are vehemently opposed run a very, very DISTANT third behind those who don't care one way or the other and those who are in favor.

Yep. Although it doesn't appear that the same folks who rushed to gin up and display their own bigotries after Prop 8 are quite as vocal this time around.

It was a lovely statement and absolutely the right thing for them to do. But there was something unseemly about much of the "celebration" here re: this issue.
The NAACP has quietly and not-so-quietly been on the side of marriage equality for a while now. It's obvious that alot of folks here were unaware of that. The cries of "better late than never" and "OH MY GOD!! THIS IS SO HUGE!!" were just... unseemly. It's almost as if some here simply could not believe that an org for, by, and about Black Americans would endorse gay marriage/rights.
Check out this video:
This was from an event last year. The fury and frustration in Ben Jealous' voice just about mirrors my own. His comment that "we only hear the negative" re: the NAACP's support of gay marriage could be carried over to black people as a whole. It is IMMENSELY frustrating to constantly have people whose only connection to your community is what they see on tv or read in the paper tell you what you and your people are about.
This is why it is so important to get the truth out. So that makes me really appreciate things such as the information in Jamaal's post and the perspective from Jealous and The Black Snob. I'm really hoping that the comments from HRC President Joe Solmonese become true before I'm too old to appreciate it:

(10,893 posts)that when you take church attendance out of the equation, support for gay rights among the Black community is higher than elsewhere.
