Comic book trailer about a black single mom raising superhero son is a must watch

http://thegrio.com/2015/08/30/comic-book-trailer-about-a-black-single-mom-raising-superhero-son-is-a-must-watch/

"While several superhero narratives feature parents (dead or alive) who serve as a guiding force for their protagonists, Raising Dion brings a fresh new perspective to the genre.

The story is told from the perspective of single black mother who’s trying to raise her “super” 7-year-old son in a world that is out to get him.

The poignant metaphor that plays out in this series – written by Dennis Liu and illustrated by Jason Piperberg – is pretty hard to miss, especially given this country’s current social climate.

According to their website,

Nicole, raises her 7 year old son, Dion, who has superpowers. Life was hard enough keeping up with the bills, let alone trying to keep track of her son’s invisibility, plasma powers, and telekinesis. In order to study his progress, Nicole films her son 24/7 with the help of her friend, Pat, who is an aspiring filmmaker. But when Nicole starts to notice mysterious men tailing her, and with Dion’s developing abilities constantly changing and becoming more powerful, she must find the courage deep within herself that she can raise Dion on her own."

It's a Google video that I can't get to embed here, but if you get a chance, I recommend checking it out. I wish it were a TV series or movie, as well as a comic book!

I hope more to come! Have you heard about Amandla Stenberg's new comic book project? I've been watching for it for awhile, looks like it should be coming out soon--Niobe: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/amandla-stenbergs-new-project-is-a-tribute-to-all-badass-black-women_55e5d661e4b0aec9f3549cd9

"Amandla Stenberg says we need more badass girls -- and she’s helping to make that happen.

The 16-year-old actress, who is widely-recognized for her activism around social and cultural issues -- is, yet again, speaking up and speaking out for women of color who often go under- and misrepresented. This time, Stenberg is using her talent to create an exciting new comic centered around the experiences of a young black warrior woman named Niobe Ayutami.

<snip>

Comics often have few characters of color and even fewer creators of color, which is partly why Stenberg -- as well as countless others in the comic book world -- is working to bridge that gap and bring these stories to life.

The actress teamed up with Stranger Comics, a multi-platform publishing company, to do just that with Niobe. Sebastian A. Jones, CEO of Stranger Comics, said his partnership with Stenberg seemed like a natural fit from the moment they met.

“I first met Amandla with her awesome mother Karen at Mixed Remixed -- an event that celebrates all cultures. It did not take long for me to know she was the person I needed to develop the most beloved character in a franchise I have been brewing for more than two decades -- a hero that has the weight of the world on her winged shoulders, a woman who will bind nations,” Jones said."

When I got to see her on a panel this year, she said that instead of waiting for Hollywood to create projects for Black actresses, she's creating content, and looking to bring projects like this to the screen.

And of course the superhero is a gorgeous, ass kicking sista! Just like Amandla!!

There's something about the trailer for the little boy comic book that has a very Sixth Sense vibe to it. It looks like an amazing film. Sweet, funny and sad all at the same time. I cannot wait for that to come out.

There used to be a share and copy function on embedded videos, but it went away or I can't find it. I'm getting to that age where I know what I know and can't adapt, lol.

I am looking forward to picking this comic book up--good stuff coming out this year. Now that comics have entered more mainstream appeal, I think people are past ready to move on from the overstuffed nordic superhero genre.

There are a lot of heroes from that time whose powers manifested at childhood.
