on the subject of Charles Ramsey and the discrimination that falls especially heavy on black men. I've watched his interviews with the same reaction as the writer but never could imagine telling it so well.
Still, I'd also like to point out Mr. Ramsey insisted that any reward offered to him should go to the victims instead. I salute a real man, who also happens to be blessed with great comic wit and timing even in adverse circumstances.

(12,610 posts)working in an iffy neighborhood in N.Y. in the 1970's it was conventional wisdom that if you felt threatened on the streets, look for a middle-age black man to help. And events I witnessed showed this to be absolutely the best advice.

(6,151 posts)My fiance started to introduce us but she was giving me that stern look, so I put on my best Jimmy Carter smile, reached for her hand, and said "My name is ****, but you can call me Honky!" She didn't expect that at all, so when the shock passed she laughed. Word always had it that she was not an easy person to amuse. But I had to do something to break the ice, and that was the first thing that popped into my head; so as usual, I said it. It's a blessing and a curse, because I tend to follow impulses. Sometimes people want to hug me, other times not. Definitely NOT!
