RARE - MLK, Jr. on How The Races Were Kept From Unifying in Post-Civil War AmericaHere, a clip rarely heard from MLK's speech at the Montgomery State Capitol after the March from Selma to Montgomery, in which he gives a historical lesson on how the races in America were kept divided after the Civl War. His efforts to reverse that division brought about his martyrdom on 4/4/68.
Only about 7 minutes and we know the story, but the telling by Dr. King should be heard.

(11,243 posts)King led the 2nd Reconstruction. And now we are on the cusp of a 3rd if we want it. I have come to the conclusion that there is too much money and power to be made by keeping prejudice alive to defeat it by purely political means. Anytime we start bumbling toward a solution, they begin pouring money into disrupting that. But people can just choose not to be divided. Just make a point of living life in a way the promotes friendships and healing.
I make two radical decisions everyday. As a woman, I make a decision everyday to love my body just as it is, and to see the beauty in all other women's bodies too. Because there is much money and power to be had by keeping women fixated on ridiculous beauty standards and fighting each other for the approval of men. And I decide not to be divided by race, economics, etc..... To see people as individuals, regardless of education, income, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
Am I successful everyday? Ever? Hell no. But I try. And my mind is free. I control that and only that. They can't make me hate and judge. And that is a powerful thing
Check out Rev. Barber's book if you haven't already. His entire philosophy is an extension of that speech.

Tomorrow is Moral March for early voting in my city, so I need to figure out who I like for the Senate. Sunday is Souls to the Polls. NC is gonna rise again this November, like in 2008. I feel it

(8,709 posts)The hardest thing in the world sometimes is to love yourself. It's so much easier to extend it to others when I start from there. And I cannot concur more that it is a daily conscious choice.
I love the way you've taken Dr. King's message to heart, connecting money and power as the tools to keep us divided on the preciousness of life and each other.
Thanks for the link to the book. I've felt it since BLM connected me in a powerful way to others, but never had a way to phrase it: The Third Reconstruction. And for the book to connect to Dr. King's speech, I must read it. Thank you.
I'm always rooting for NC. I have a friend there who is as strong an ally as you
