Another frontier work: Seraph on the Suwannee, which depicts the lives and (mis)fortunes of a Cracker couple. Often criticized for its narcissistic and "submissive female" main character, it represents a rare early and sensitive account of struggling Plain Folk in a work of fiction by a black novelist.

Hurston advised non-whites, if they wished to understand black folks, to skip the dialectical stereotyping, and to focus on "invective and metaphor." Her writings utterly teem with this.

She also said that to understand the future of America is to understand the South of Florida and its hyper stew of cultures. Right 80 yrs. ago, right today.

Hurston fearlessly wandered the jook joints of Polk County and the white-owned turpentine plantations of Dixie County with a pistol strapped to her dress.

God, she was tough & brilliant.
