Larry Davis, director of Pitt’s Center on Race and Social Problems, wasn’t involved in the report, but when told of its findings on racial differences, he said they’re not necessarily surprising.

“It’s coming from a long history of deprivation, where historically things haven’t gone so well for them,” Mr. Davis said.

Black adults older than 65 now can remember the hardships of their parents and for their race in general during the pre-civil rights era, he noted.

By comparison, they have plenty of advantages that give a measure of satisfaction and a safety net from Social Security and Medicare that helps equalize some of the income and health disparities that exist between the races in younger cohorts. Many elderly blacks, including Mr. Sims, also attach a lot of meaning to their spirituality.

However, we both acknowledge that many people are clueless on their "happiness set".

I keep thinking that I need to tell the 1% how lack of money effects social problems, and too much money may adjust Maslow's hierarchy of needs, but it doesn't really seem to make one happier.

No surprises, yet some people keep missing this point, usually never getting the point.
